** Positions will function as Special Activities Instructor for the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island**
*This is an hourly position, generally working 30-40 hours per week. It is classified as temporary/part-time and does not include state benefits.*
Description of Work:
This is a seasonal position slated to be filled in March or April of 2025.
Special Activities at the NC Aquarium on Roanoke Island are hands-on programs with small groups of participants, ranging in duration from one to several hours at a time. Such programs include but are not limited to: children’s summer camps (single-day and week-long, non-residential), kayaking programs, stand-up paddle boarding, crabbing and fishing, animal ambassador programs, behind-the-scenes tours, toddler programs, birthday parties, overnight programs, dissection labs, beach ecology trips, and salt marsh field trips. Special Activities Instructors will lead these programs independently and co-lead summer camps. Instructors will work with permanent staff, interns, and occasionally volunteers, and are expected to uphold and encourage a positive, safe, and supportive work environment.
Applicants should be articulate and enthusiastic, have a strong work ethic, be able to work well both independently and within a team, and be able to adapt to a rigorous and flexible schedule. Candidates should be safety-minded, possess strong customer service skills, exhibit good time management and organizational skills, have experience in leadership roles, be able to demonstrate strong problem-solving skills, be comfortable handling live animals, and be comfortable working around the water.
Essential Daily Responsibilities:
- Co-lead daily summer camps, Monday-Friday
- Independently conduct programs, both indoors and outdoors
- Handle live animals while interpreting during programs
- Drive a fifteen-passenger van for summer camp shuttle and field trips
- Assist with interpretation in the Sea Senses touch pools gallery
- Assist with staffing discovery carts and learning stations in public galleries
- Other duties as assigned by the Education Curator or permanent Educators
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Candidates should be able to show through their record of work, education, and/or volunteer experience, and/or demonstrate in their interview the following:
- Customer service experience
- Experience presenting programs in either a formal setting or in an informal setting such as a camp, zoo, aquarium, museum, environmental education facility or other community organization
- Experience working with school-aged children
- CPR & First Aid certification (CPR/First Aid Certification must be obtained within the first month of employment, if not already acquired.)
- Valid Driver’s License or the ability to obtain for employment
The following skills and/or current certifications are preferred but not required: Lifeguard Certification, kayak/stand-up paddle boarding experience, experience facilitating camps, water safety skills, animal handling experience, a working knowledge of Outer Banks flora and fauna, a North Carolina driver’s license, experience driving a multi-passenger vehicle, and completion of at least two years towards a degree in Biology, Marine Sciences, Environmental Education, Natural Resources, or a related field.
Weekend, evening, and holiday work required. Occasional travel is required for Aquarium programs.
Must meet DNCR Fleet Safety Guidelines and have the ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license.
Candidates must be able to lift at least 50 pounds and be able to spend extended periods of time outdoors.
If selected for hire, a background check is required and must be completed prior to the first day of work.
Minimum Education and Experience:
High school or General Educational Development (GED) and one year of experience as related to knowledge, skills, and abilities in area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
