Primary Purpose of Position
Provides academic advisement for prospective, current, and former students within a specified undergraduate academic department or equivalent unit of a college. Assist University College in assesses academic level, attends to student academic inquiries, assists in the resolution of individual academic problems, and advises on academic program changes. Advises and assists students in the development of academic plans and class schedules Analyzes applications, transfer evaluations, and transcripts for entry and exit from the university. Develops and maintains appropriate files and records. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Ability to use independent judgment and to manage and impart confidential information. Ability to analyze course prerequisites, certification, and / or curriculum / graduation requirements. Ability to maintain calendars and schedule appointments. Knowledge of academic standards governing student probation, suspension, and / or expulsion. Records maintenance skills.Knowledge of student recruitment and retention issues. Ability to gather data, compiles information, and prepares reports. Ability to evaluate student transcripts and / or records. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to analyze and solve problems. Minimum Education / Experience Required Minimum Qualifications :
A bachelor’s degree in education, counseling, behavioral science, or related field and one year of work experience in academic advising, teaching or in a student services environment, or an approved equivalent combination of education and experience in which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been attained (see below). Master’s degree preferred. Good oral and written communications skills, along with good organizational skills required. Requires basic knowledge in the usage of personal computers, including word processing.
Equivalencies : A bachelor’s degree in education, counseling, behavioral science, or related field and one year of work experience in academic advising, teaching or in a student services environment OR a Bachelor’s degree in an unrelated field and two or more years of work experience in academic advising, teaching or in a student services environment OR a Master’s degree or higher.
Preferred Qualifications :
Prefer academic advising and / or higher education administration experience. Division I experience preferred. Familiar with student information systems, i.e., BANNER, SIS . Knowledge of NCAA / MEAC rules and regulations. Licenses or Certification required by Statute or Regulation N / A
