Primary Duties/Responsibilities of Position:

This position is one of several HVAC Mechanics serving in the Maintenance Shop within CFMO’s Facility Management Branch. The employee in this position is responsible for heating, ventilating, and air conditioning maintenance tasks in support of Army National Guard facilities in the western region of North Carolina, roughly half of our overall building inventory.

Description of Work Unit and/or Division:

The Construction and Facilities Management Office (CFMO) is responsible for all engineering issues that affect National Guard facilities statewide, to include programming, design, and construction of new facilities. Existing facilities are maintained, modified or expanded, and utilities consumption is monitored. Environmental compliance is ensured by means of conscientious monitoring of training activities and other potentially damaging activities including construction. The work within the CFMO is highly dynamic in nature, requiring employees to learn and embrace new technologies, procedures, policies and criteria. Must have and maintain a valid driver's license.

DPS is comprised of approximately 6,000 permanent positions and nearly 13,000 NC National Guard soldiers and airmen. The salary grade for this position is NC10. State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY result.

Per 5 CFR 731, upon appointment, applicant must be able to obtain a favorable suitability and fitness determination from a Tier 1 background investigation conducted by the Office of Personnel Management. Failure to obtain a favorable determination may result in termination of employment.

To qualify for this position, applicants must demonstrate ALL of the following KSAs:

  • Experience of proper construction industry techniques and practices, as well as building code requirements for conditions and situations typically encountered.
  • Experience in refrigeration theory
  • Experience of electricity sufficient to troubleshoot and repair complex electrical control circuits.
  • Experience in the design and operation of pneumatic control systems.
  • Experience of the practices, methods, materials, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment.
  • Experience diagnosing equipment malfunctions and prescribe repair procedures.
  • Candidates must be able to perform physical exertion normally associated with building construction, repair, or inspection to include walking, standing, bending, stooping, working in awkward positions, and the use of ladders, scaffolding, and scissors lift up to a height of 40 feet.
  • Must be able to lift moderately heavy objects weighing up to 60 lbs.

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and four years of progressive experience in the installation, maintenance or repair of air conditioning chillers, air handling, chilled water distribution and control systems including one year at the journey level; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Qualifications Requires current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations part 82, subpart F.
