Start your journey towards success! We are currently accepting applications for a Maintenance / Construction Technician III at the Samarcand Training Academy of the North Carolina Department of Public Safety.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) 1st Shift, Monday-Friday 8AM-5PM with state benefits including retirement, health insurance, vacation leave, sick leave and paid holidays. This position will perform journeyman level duties at the advanced-skill level for areas such as HVAC, plumbing, Electrical and Building Trades a majority of the time. Specific duties include:

• Planning and coordination of multiple trade disciplines.
• May provide technical guidance and supervision to other positions engaged in semiskilled or unskilled labor (including inmates) to assist in completing tasks and provide support to other staff members performing trade skills necessary during preventive maintenance or other duties as assigned by the supervisor as deemed necessary.
• S ubject to call back, work past normal duty hours and on weekends in the event of emergencies as needed.
• Required to utilize a PC to complete work order logs, vendor purchases and training requirements.
  
  

Employee must always maintain professionalism, honesty, and integrity in all situations in the presence of other state officials, campus guests and visitors. Interact with co-workers, supervisors, and general public to provide assistance and relay information. This person must have the ability to follow oral and written instruction.

About the Samarcand Training Academy:

Samarcand Training Academy is the primary training facility within the Department of Public Safety and provides both in-residence and commuter, basic and advanced training courses for Special Agents of the North Carolina SBI and ALE, Troopers of the North Carolina Highway Patrol, members of the North Carolina National Guard, officers of Probation & Parole and Juvenile Justice, officers with the UNC System, and members of county and municipal law enforcement from across the state. Samarcand Training Academy currently consists of two campuses; the 460-acre main campus in Moore County, and the 113-acre satellite campus in Montgomery County which is the future home of the Center for Safer Schools. The main campus is made up of 22 buildings; housing, staff and instructor offices; a dining facility; a gymnasium; two (2) fitness centers; an auditorium; 13 classrooms; twelve (12) dormitories with 195 student and instructor beds; a Weapons Training Simulator; Firearms Training Center with two (2) live-fire ranges and range house; a physically challenging obstacle course, and a tactical training building. Center for Safer Schools satellite campus includes multiple classrooms and offices, a gymnasium, a cafeteria, a library, an admin building, a large auditorium, and several sports venues. Staff members of Samarcand Training Academy serve both campuses, and while most will have office space on the main campus, several will be co-located with other entities at the Center for Safer Schools campus in the near future.

To qualify for this position, applicants must demonstrate ALL of the following KSAs :

• Experience using skills such as the methods, practices, and materials used in general to complex maintenance and repair of equipment and machinery.
• Experience in the general preventive maintenance and repair of facilities and infrastructure.
• Experience in the use of tools in two or more of the following trades: HVAC, Plumbing, Electrical, Building/Construction.
• Experience in the use of a computer and applications such as MS Word, Excel, Outlook or other email systems,
  
  

Management Preferences:

• Experience operating the more common types of machine shop or woodworking power equipment.
• Experience guiding the work of skilled workers.
• Experience following oral and written instructions.
  
  

Necessary Special Requirements:

• Physical strength sufficient to perform heavy physical tasks for extended periods of time.
  
  

Minimum Education And Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two (2) years of progressive experience in the assigned trade areas;

or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualification May require current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations Part 82, Subpart F.

Military Experience
