The Challenge
We are looking for an Assistant District Engineer to join our District 1 Field Office team.
In this role. you will:
- Assist in reviewing driveway permits, encroachments, evaluating daily roadway inspection reports.
- Review contractor claims for additional contract time or compensation.
- Compute water velocities and depths needed to analyze ditches, channels and pipes.
- Conduct engineering studies and projects.
- Prepare technical letters and reports.
- Attend planning/zoning meetings.
- Provide NCDOT comments to developers.
- Evaluate data collected by field staff and incorporate the information into transportation studies.
- Review contract plans, specifications, materials test results, agreements/provisions for accuracy and completeness.
- Develop and maintain official records of the State Road system.
- Monitor and report project status.
- Assign work to technicians.
- Review subdivision plans, outdoor advertising, and junkyard permits, oversize and overweight permits, road additions/deletions, and Right of Way disposals.
- Assist senior engineers in the implementation and administration of roadway and structure construction projects awarded to private contractors.
What You Bring
- Computer experience, including Microsoft Office, SAP, and drafting software.
- Experience applying engineering concepts to solve basic engineering problems.
- Knowledge of transportation-related engineering standards, policies, and procedures.
- Customer service experience related to solving problems involving explaining complicated engineering concepts to customer groups.
- Experience writing memos, reports, and emails clearly conveying technical information and engineering concepts.
- Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of Civil Engineering, including highway construction and maintenance methods and techniques.
- Ability to read and interpret highway construction plans, analyze, and solve difficult highway maintenance and construction problems.
- Solid communications skills to communicate verbally and in writing with NCDOT staff and employees, government officials, contractors, developers, and the public.
- Experience managing teams is preferred.
- Ability to work outside in all environmental conditions, noise and traffic hazards, and agility to traverse difficult and steep terrain.
- Ability to safely operate a State vehicle.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in engineering; or
- An equivalent combination of training and experience.
Notes
- We may require registration as a Professional Engineer by NC Board of Examiners for Engineers & Surveyors.
