About Us The Fuel Quality Section is North Carolina’s regulatory authority for ensuring the quality of motor fuels (gasoline and diesel), heating fuels (kerosene and fuel oil), and motor oils. We safeguard the public and industries through rigorous inspections, respond to consumer concerns, and ensure compliance with quality standards. Our operations span a central laboratory in Raleigh and a dedicated field staff serving territories across the state.
The Opportunity
We’re seeking a Fuel Quality Laboratory Supervisor to lead and inspire our team of chemists and chemistry technicians in ensuring fuel quality for the state. As the supervisor, you’ll:
- Lead and Oversee: Supervise the Fuel Quality Laboratory team, assign daily workloads, and review sample test results.
- Innovate and Train: Serve as the subject matter expert on lab instrumentation and test methods, provide hands-on training, and assess staff performance.
- Impact Public Safety: Issue critical test result condemnations to field staff and uphold the accuracy and integrity of testing processes.
- Drive Excellence: Perform routine sample testing and maintain meticulous records to ensure compliance with state and federal standards.

To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL of the following:
- Expertise in Chemistry: Knowledge of chemistry principles, lab applications, and motor fuels inspection regulations.
- Leadership Skills: Ability to supervise, train, and evaluate a technical team.
- Analytical Thinking: Ability to interpret complex results, solve theoretical problems, and ensure laboratory accuracy.
- Communication Proficiency: Ability to clearly present technical information, both orally and in writing.
- Technical Savvy: Ability to use with Microsoft Office, perform statistical analysis, and analyze, develop and interpret scientific methodologies.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
You may qualify by an equivalent combination of education and experience, either through years of education or years of directly related experience, or a combination of both.
Bachelor's degree in chemistry from an appropriately accredited institution and two years progressive chemistry laboratory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and directly related experience.
