Description of Work

As of January 1, 2025, the new salary range will be $35,984-$62,971.

Salary for a trainee may be set lower than the classification salary range and recruitment range that is listed in the posting. The North Carolina Forest Service (NCFS) is designated as an emergency response Division and a team of professionals who provide forest protection, resource management and environmental education to the residents and landowners of NC through a variety of programs. The NCFS provides services to the 100 counties in NC.


The B.R.I.D.G.E. (Building, Rehabilitating, Instructing, Developing, Growing, Employing) Program is a cooperative effort between the NC Forest Service and NC Department of Public Safety. The primary goal of the program is to provide well-trained and equipped forest firefighting crews ready at a moment's notice. The Project leader is responsible for safety, security, and training of young offenders (age ranges 18-36). The employee will provide training in a variety of forestry and community-based work projects, such as fire control, forest management, trail construction, nursery work, variety of vocational projects and emergency situations. Duties are carried out in a variety of conditions and on a variety of state, federal, private, and public lands with an area of responsibility within the 32 counties of Western NC.

Work hours are typically 8-5 Monday – Friday. Evening, holiday and/or weekend work is required during response to wildland fires and other all-hazard responses. Overnight travel may be required for training and other work.

Official NCFS uniforms and vehicle are provided for official work use.

Residency requirements will be discussed during time of interview.

Must be cleared by the National Criminal Information Computer (NCIC)

Must obtain certification as a Custodial Agent for the State Division of Adult Correction within 90 days of employment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL of the following:


  • Knowledge of fire control and/or firefighting techniques, or firefighting equipment, or prescribed burning.
  • Knowledge or experience directing daily activities
  • Knowledge or experience in a vocational skill, such as carpentry, painting, masonry, plumbing, or mechanical systems.
  • Ability to train and instruct
  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form
  • Ability to adjust to meet the needs of the Program
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships and be a team player
  • Possess good management and leadership skills


MANAGEMENT PREFERENCES:

Experience working with and managing young offenders or inmates

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

You may qualify by an equivalent combination of education and experience, either through years of education or years of directly related experience, or a combination of both.


Associate s degree in forest management or an environmental or natural science curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution; or High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of related experience in providing forestry services; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Necessary Special Qualification: Possession of a valid North Carolina driver s license required within 90 days of hire.
