DEQ has an open opportunity for an Environmental Specialist I.
“As of January 1, 2025, the new salary range will be $45,926 - $80,369.”
It is full-time (40 hours per week) with State Benefits.
This position currently qualifies for a hybrid telework option with routine office and remote workdays. The NC Department of Environmental Quality trusts our employees to be self-motivated and successful in hybrid/remote roles. Telework options are subject to change at the discretion of management.
The primary purpose of the Environmental Specialist I is to perform wastewater facility inspections and address compliance needs at NPDES and Non-Discharge facilities and provide aid to Central Office and Regional Office staff with permit reviews.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform on-site compliance evaluations, inspections of Non-Discharge and/or NPDES wastewater facilities.
- Conduct on-site compliance investigations in response to complaints and reports of activities contributing to environmental impacts.
- Provide compliance oversight of Non-Discharge and NPDES facilities, including monitoring record reviews, reconciliation, and preparation of documents.
- Valid Driver License.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL of the following:
- Ability to apply the basic environmental concepts, practices, and theories involved in the design, development, review, permitting, and/or operations of projects/sites and their potential environmental and safety impacts.
- Ability to analyze, manipulate and evaluate information/data, including the use of software.
- Ability to formulate or assist in the development of management alternatives and recommendations.
- Ability to organize and direct moderately complex research or field studies.
- Ability to prepare written/verbal reports; and ability to work with considerable independence.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor's degree in one of the agricultural, biological, engineering, environmental or natural resource sciences or a closely related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Graduating Senior students with applicable degrees listed above with an anticipated graduation date will be considered. Job offers will be contingent upon completion of their degree.
