DEQ has an open opportunity for a Geologist/Hydrogeologist.
It is full-time (40 hours per week) with State Benefits. *
The Geologist/Hydrogeologist position is in the Corrective Action Branch of the Underground Storage Tank (UST) Section. The Hydrogeologist is responsible for independently performing advanced geological or hydrogeological studies, case analysis and managing related projects pertaining to the UST Program. The hydrogeologist is responsible for providing a high level of technical assistance and advice to responsible parties, their environmental consultants, licensed geologist/hydrogeologist, licensed engineers, and their other representatives. This position will aid in the implementation of the Department’s emerging contaminants and PFAS initiatives including PFAS sampling and analyses strategies, remedial measures, rule development and UST Section staff training.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide expert knowledge of pertinent rules, regulations and policies for petroleum and hazardous substance UST releases, petroleum releases from non-UST sources, and petroleum mixed with emerging contaminant and PFAS releases to responsible parties (RPs), environmental consultants, owners and operators, other state and local officials and other interested parties.
- Provide project management oversight for a wide variety of environmental and geologic/hydrogeologic investigations, assessments, and remediation activities.
- Analyze and evaluate scientific and technical data including groundwater, soil, soil gas/vapor, geology and hydrogeology data.
- Serves as the subject matter expert on emerging contaminants and PFAS for the UST Section and Department initiatives and provide technical assistance and training to UST staff.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in geology, geosciences, physical science or a related field, or engineering with 30 credit hours of geological science course work from an accredited college or university. Some positions may require licensure as a Professional Geologist by the North Carolina Board for the Licensing of Geologists; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
