The Redwood classroom-based trainer 2 is responsible for providing educational services during the day program. The Redwood CBTR 2 is responsible for implementing training for groups of residents addressing the skill areas of self-care, vocational, communication, community living, and functional academics. The CBTR 2 is responsible for writing goaled programs and collecting data on resident objectives and for writing monthly progress notes. The CBTR 2 is responsible for completing assessments and for communicating any needs for the Redwood day placement to the teacher who is assigned to oversee that site and for collaborating with the teacher to ensure appropriate services and schedules are carried out as prescribed.

This position is assigned to work with a primarily dually/diagnosed population with varying skills and/or behavior issues to assist with social skills, self-care skills and any other community readiness skills as determined by the teacher and/or resource center director.

The remainder of the job responsibilities involve providing basic care to residents and performing miscellaneous duties as needed, including toileting, dressing, meal coverage, floor coverage, etc. Because most residents in the Summit area are not totally independent in basic care skills, all staff must assist when necessary. Examples include cleaning toileting accidents that occur during training times when other staff are not available; assisting with hygiene; assisting medical staff with treatments, etc.

The Redwood Trainer 2 (Classroom Based) must be a role model to all support staff and as such, must understand person-centered philosophies, ICF-IDD standards, J. Iverson Riddle Developmental Center Policies and Procedures, and state of the art services for people with developmental disabilities. The Trainer 2 (Classroom Based) must be able to work with a variety of professional and paraprofessional staff. They must be organized and able to produce an appropriate volume of work within set timeframes. They must be able to work without direct daily supervision and be able to react quickly under stressful situations to keep residents safe. The Trainer 2 (Classroom Based) must be able to accurately observe and record information.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Documented experience implementing programs, treatment goals, and/or person-centered philosophies/plans
  • Employee will be required to successfully complete training through our Staff Development department which includes, but is not limited to NCI, CPR, Body Mechanics and lifting
  • Frequent lifting and bending required
  • To be considered for employment the applicant must be in good standing with the NC Health Care Personnel Registry
  • The applicant must pass the physical requirements test
Must be capable of providing eight hours of care and training to individuals with severe intellectual and physical disabilities. Must react quickly under stressful situations to keep residents safe. Must be able to accurately observe and record information.
Physical Requirements:

Must be capable of assisting with walking, lifting, feeding, etc. This position will require some seated activities as well as some non-seated activities. Visual acuity to attend to resident safety.

Management prefers:
Required minimum training is two years of experience providing direct services to people with developmental disabilities in health care or related area; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

The Trainer II (Classroom Based) would need to successfully complete required training/classes and be certified in NVCIF. The position may require a NC class C van license in order to provide training in a variety of locations. Previous experience in classrooms or workshops serving people with developmental disabilities and/or mental health diagnoses would be helpful.

The Trainer II (Classroom Based) uses pre-designed computer programs for Center correspondence and to enter progress notes. Visual skills are required to ensure resident safety, perform supervisory responsibilities, and to communicate effectively with residents who do not use verbal language to express themselves.

The Health Care Technician II (Classroom Based) would need to successfully complete required training/classes and be certified in NVCIP classes. The position may require a NC class C van license in order to provide training in a variety of locations. Previous experience in classrooms or workshops serving people with developmental disabilities would be helpful.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements


High school or General Educational Development diploma and one year of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Degrees must be from appropriately accredited colleges or universities.
