This posting is for a Transportation Supervisor II in the Davidson County Maintenance Unit. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair and construction of state maintained roads and road features. This position will be responsible for the planning, organization, and supervision of all work activities and materials and equipment needs for multiple crews in the most complex transportation maintenance work covering the maintenance and repair of state maintained roads. Work will include pipe installation, shoulder and ditch maintenance, asphalt pavement repair, installation of traffic control devices, installation of erosion control devices, and operating various pieces of construction equipment, hand and power tools. This position will be responsible for maintaining work records, time sheets, job reports, inventory records, planning work operations, adjusting work assignments, training employees on-the-job, conducting performance reviews, assisting with interviewing, and recommending new staff. This position will also respond to emergency response situations including traffic accidents, fallen trees, snow and ice removal and other emergencies as they occur. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

- Working knowledge of standard maintenance procedures.
- Experience in planning and organizing work.
- Experience in filling out daily work sheets that document personnel, equipment and location worked.
- Experience in calculating quantities of material needed for work crews to perform daily functions.
- Experience in supervising a work crew or crews.
Additional Expectations:
Responsibilities of this position include budgeting, documenting expenditures for multiple crews, using the Maintenance Management System (MMS) to assign task numbers and to compare actual cost with established guidelines, and aid Engineer by analyzing expenditures and altering work crew assignment to maintain fiscal responsibilities. Employee must utilize NCDOT required proper protective equipment and follow OSHR and NCDOT safety policy and procedure manual.
The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing will be required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substance and alcohol testing.
This position will be responsible for transporting inmates for work detail. An inmate card approved by the NC Department of Public Safety must be issued to NCDOT employees to transport inmates. In order to obtain an inmate card applicants must undergo a criminal history check, complete necessary training and orientation, and be at least 21 years of age.
Safety toe shoes required.
Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma and seven years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and directly related experience. Experience must be related to functional area of the work that the position will supervise.
