Essential Job Duties
Reporting to the assistant dean of finance and operations, the director of IT is responsible for all aspects related to management and oversight of the computing and learning environments at the Wilson College of Textiles. This includes, but is not limited to, help desk support, server acquisition and management, web and database services, LAN administration, distance education technologies and support, Active Directory management, multimedia services, storage, and any other IT related technologies.
The director is responsible for promoting a positive culture of IT support both within and beyond the college community. The director strives to maintain exceptional customer service levels while also considering the importance of customer experience.
This position is also an active technical participant with the team and assists with incidents as appropriate.
The director is responsible for managing and allocating appropriate people and fiscal resources related to information technology operations in the Wilson College of Textiles.
The director will manage the Textiles Creative and Technology Services (TCTS) team which is a group of five full-time positions and a large group of student technicians who serve the College on a variety of technology needs.
The director is required to work with vendors to develop customized solutions that work within the active directory and security constraints at NC State. They are responsible for the evaluation, recommendation, and implementation of server infrastructure, specialized applications, and specialized hardware that integrates with the pedagogical and research needs of the college. The individual must be able to note trends in technical usage that may merit the reconfiguration of the software so that it continues to meet the needs of the customer. The individual must also be able to assess contractual agreements for software licenses with the office of general counsel so that appropriate software can be negotiated and purchased from the specialized textile vendors.
Other Responsibilities
Tier 2 and Tier 3 Help Desk Operations (40%)
Assigns incidents to appropriate team members including themselves based on the type of request and coverage available.
IT Management (20%)
Management of fiscal and personnel resources within TCTS. Strategically allocate budgets and oversee spending of state, foundation, and ETF funds under the direction of the assistant dean of finance and operations. Assign team members to projects or key responsibilities as appropriate.
Representative for College and University IT Committees (20%)
Represents Wilson College in college and university level committees and meetings. (i.e. Campus IT Directors, Wilson College IT Committee, Wilson College Safety Committee, Wilson College ETF/Infrastructure Committee, InTag and Engineering Sys Admins).
IT Project Management (10%)
Projects involving infrastructure, facilities, policy development and implementation. (i.e. an entire lab infrastructure renovation that involves IT, A/V and MEP implications).
Faculty and Staff Solution Development (10%)
Consult faculty, staff and department heads on solutions for college-wide issues that require larger projects for implementation and resolution. (i.e. developing a secure research policy, procedure and enforcement).
Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience
- Master’s degree and at least 2 years of experience in IT; or Bachelor’s degree and at least 4 years of experience in IT; or an equivalent combination of education, training and relevant experience.
- At least 1 year of supervisory experience (students or professional staff).
Other Required Qualifications
- Project management experience in technical settings.
- 3 years of experience leading key IT initiatives.
- Experience with Windows Active Directory.
- Understanding of ITSM and incident response systems (i.e. Zendesk, ServiceNow).
Preferred Qualifications
- At least 5 years of experience with Windows client management technologies such as Active Directory, Group Policy, SCCM, and Powershell.
- Familiarity with php, javascript, and other web programming languages and version control systems.
- Experience with Slack.
- Experience with G-Suite or Office 365 cloud productivity platforms.
- Familiarity with configuration management systems.
- Experience with Windows Server Administration.
- Understanding of multiple web and database server platforms.
- Understanding of core networking and security principles.
- Experience in a heterogeneous environment consisting of Windows, Linux, and Mac systems.
- Experience developing automations to improve business process or workflows
