Essential Job Duties

Extension at NC State University partners with communities to deliver education and technology that enrich North Carolinians’ lives, land, and economy. NC State University is hiring a full-time postdoc position (1.0 FTE ) (Nutrition Incentives Extension Scholar) to help assess and implement nutrition incentive programs, including fruit and vegetable voucher programs and produce prescription programs, in select NC counties. This position will be in Raleigh, NC but will interface with county and district Cooperative Extension staff, volunteers, and community-based agency/organization professionals. The Nutrition Incentives Extension Postdoc Scholar will help assess the community’s needs; work side-by-side with county-level Extension staff to coordinate the implementation of new and existing policies and programs in alignment with the project’s stated goals; and support the state-level evaluation team. To better understand each county’s needs and to coordinate these efforts, the Scholar will first help collect and elucidate nutrition-specific needs assessment data. Based on each county’s level of readiness, the Scholar will then work with community partners and internal stakeholders to increase access to nutrition incentive programs and evaluate the nutrition and health impacts.

Essential job duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead the pilot trial assessing produce prescription program effectiveness.
  • Lead the formative evaluation assessment of piloting a mobile wallet implementation of Double Up Bucks fruit/vegetable vouchers at farmer’s markets.
  • Assist in the design and implementation of fruit/vegetable voucher program outcomes assessment at mobile produce markets.
  • Support formative research examining barriers and facilitators to participation in existing nutrition incentives programs at farmer’s markets and mobile produce markets.
  • Develop application materials for the NC State Institutional Review Board ( IRB ).
  • Obtain all NC State Institutional Review Board approvals and submit/monitor any necessary amendments.
  • Assist with implementing community-driven policies, activities, and programs in alignment with nutrition incentive program goals.
  • Obtain appropriate CITI training needed for Institutional Review Board approval through NC State University (All Campus HSR )
  • Obtain consent in person or virtually from all participants in research activities, including focus groups, interviews, or other intervention components (as needed depending on project strategies).
  • Support all funding activities, including but not limited to, identifying future sources of funding to support programs and activities and grant proposal writing to maintain program funding.
  • Maintain timely communication on nutrition incentive activities with the PI team, Evaluator, Project Coordinators, and other partners, including but not limited to scheduling regular meetings, creating meeting agendas, maintaining notes, and communicating key next steps with the team.
  • Provide County Extension Agents with ongoing technical (online and in-person) support related to nutrition incentive programming.
  • Provide community partners (e.g., farmers, mobile produce markets, farmers markets) with ongoing technical (online and in-person) support related to programming as needed.
  • Engage with CDC’s Strategic Engagement Community and set up technical assistance with CDC -supported providers needed by internal and external team members.
  • Oversee site visits when data is collected from participants to ensure compliance with human evaluation protocols, and protocols for working with minors, and adults.
  • Manage collection, integrity, and quality of all data collected from both minors and adults using data software.
  • Coordinate and connect organizations and coalitions when appropriate.
  • Participating in county-level Cooperative Extension and community partner meetings.
  • Support public messaging strategies and the publication process of program outcomes through social media, news articles, technical reports, peer-reviewed journals, and other outlets as determined by the PI team, county-level staff, and the community.
  • Assist in the writing and revising of abstracts for a professional presentation at the regional, national, and international levels in accordance with proposed grant activities.
  • Lead the publication process of designated data sets through the analysis, management, drafting, revision, and submission of manuscripts to peer-reviewed journals.
  • Conduct and participate in meetings, conferences, and other activities to network on behalf of the program nationwide.
  • Assist in monthly and annual reports to funders based on program activities.
  • Provide information about the program and program outcomes to the public through presentations and dissemination materials
  • Coordinate and maintain social media through, at minimum, bi-weekly posts on websites and project pages
  • Maintain web page content for the project website, ensuring every quarter that information is up to date
  • Create marketing and media materials as needed using the Canva graphic design platform.
  • Support public messaging strategies and the publication process of program outcomes through social media, news articles, interviews, and other outlets as determined by the PI team

Department Required Skills

  • Doctoral degree in nutrition or public health-related field.
  • Three years of experience implementing community-based nutrition research, employing qualitative and quantitative methodologies.
  • One year of experience developing grant proposals.
  • Experience working with culturally, linguistically, and socio-economically diverse populations.
  • Ability to design data-gathering instruments; prepare and manage large databases, prepare, analyze, and draw conclusions from data.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills for students, lay, and professional audiences.
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite (e.g., Excel, PowerPoint), Canva Pro, and/or Adobe Suite, and Google applications.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

  • Experiencing managing nutrition incentive programs, such as produce prescription programs, medically tailored meals, or fruit/vegetable voucher programs.
  • Experience implementing randomized controlled trials (RCTs).
  • Experience in nutrition education curriculum design and implementation.
  • Intermediate Spanish reading and speaking skills.
