North Carolina Wesleyan University seek a dynamic and experienced professional and leader with experience in higher ed student services and academic advising to serve as the Director of Student Success. The Director of Student Success provides strategic leadership and oversight for programs designed to enhance student academic success, retention, and degree completion.
The position is responsible for developing, implementing, and assessing the first-year experience program (including first year academic advising) and support initiatives – including tutoring, academic coaching and intervention, supplemental instruction, and learning assistance programs. The Director works collaboratively with faculty, academic and student affairs, and university leadership to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment that promotes student achievement.
Key Responsibilities
· Develop and implement comprehensive academic support services that enhance student retention and graduation rates
· Provide academic advising and registration for incoming first-year traditional students as well as the instruction assignments for the University’s WES 101 (online, pre-orientation course for entering students) and COL 103 (skills-focused first semester course for entering students).
· Oversee tutoring, supplemental instruction, academic coaching, and study skills workshops.
· Design and implement intervention strategies for at-risk students, including early start systems and personalized academic support plans.
· Work closely with academic advisors, faculty members, the Office of Career Development and Leadership, and student affairs to provide holistic student support.
· Monitor and analyze student performance data to assess the effectiveness of academic support programs.
· Work with the Office of Institutional Effectiveness to generate reports on student retention, progression, and academic success metrics to share with institutional leadership.
· Identify and pursue funding opportunities, including grants and sponsorships, to expand academic support initiatives.
· Oversee hiring, training, and supervision of tutoring staff, peer mentors, and academic advisors and coaches.
· Promote academic support services through targeted marketing campaigns, social media, campus workshops, and orientation programs.
· Represent the university at conferences and professional organizations related to student success and academic support.
Required Qualifications
· Master’s degree in Education, Higher Education Administration, Student Affairs, or related field (Doctorate preferred).
· Minimum 5-7 years of experience in academic support, student success, or higher education administration.
