JOB DESCRIPTION
CMED PUBLIC SAFETY TELECOMMUNICATOR
Nature of Work:
Under Supervision of the Assistant Operations Manager and Shift Supervisor, the CMED Telecommunicator is responsible for the coordination and control of CMED radio and telephone communications relating to the provision of Emergency Medical Services; answering emergency telephone lines and processing incoming emergency requests using the Medical Priority dispatch System (MPDS) protocols as established by the National Academy of Emergency Medical Dispatch (NAEMD).
Responsibilities:
In addition to the normal duties as assigned, the CMED Telecommunicator is responsible for the following:
1. Receive and record radio and/or telephone calls for EMS assistance; select appropriate course of action for each call as outlined in the Operational Policies and Procedures (OPPs) Manual or as instructed by the shift supervisor.
2. In accordance with local and regional plans, coordinate the movements of EMS vehicles while enroute to the scene and/or to a medical facility.
3. Provide telecommunication channels between appropriate medical facilities, EMS personnel, and other appropriate personnel. The channel may operate with telephone or radio.
4. Maintain status of all receiving hospitals and provide this information to EMS personnel as needed.
5. Maintain appropriate records of all telecommunications.
6. Insure the operation of the CMED system in accordance with applicable rules and regulations of the Federal Communications Commission and the North Central
Connecticut EMS Council policy.
7. Additional duties related to the operation or working conditions, as assigned by the Assistant Operations Manager or Shift Supervisor.
8. Cross-training with all positions in the communication center, management and supervisory positions excluded.
9. Notify the on duty supervisor of any problems that may disturb operations, or circumstances not outlined in the Operations manual.
10. Maintain all certifications required to perform all duties for this position.
Qualifications:
1. High School diploma or equivalency, some college preferred.
2. Command of the English language, both written and verbal, and the ability to speak clearly and distinctly.
3. Minimum of one-year experience in EMS communications and/or successful completion of a dispatcher-training course preferred.
4. Successful completion of a Medical Priority Dispatch System (MPDS) certification course as established by the National Academy of Emergency Medical Dispatch (NAEMD) within first 3 months of employment. CPR certification.
