Job Responsibilities

The Family Support Specialist (FSS) is responsible for initiating and maintaining regular and long-term contact and support with families. This activity will primarily take place in the family's home and requires travel, with each visit lasting at least one hour. Virtual visits will be scheduled as a last resort The interventions should be family-centered, strength-based, and directed at : establishing a trusting relationship; assisting in strengthening the parent-child relationship; assisting parents in improving their skills to optimize the home environment; improving the family support system; and increasing the family’s ability to problem solve and assume the role of advocate for themselves and their children. Activities may also include but are not limited to; administering the Family Resilience and Opportunities for Growth Scale (FROG), administering additional screening tools such as the ASQ, ASQ-SE, Depression Screens etc.,identifying and referring families for other supportive services, including health care services. The FSS will also be responsible for assisting the family in establishing goals and supporting them throughout this process and is responsible for implementing activities outlined on the Family Service Plan to address areas of concern that were identified on the FROG scale.

Minimum Qualifications

High School diploma / GED and three (3) years of job- related experience in a social services-related position; or One (1) year of experience at the lower level Social Svcs Tech 2 (SST011) or equivalent position.

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Experience in working with or providing services to children and their families.
  • Knowledge of infant and child development.
  • Willing to engage in building reflective capacity (e.g., capacity for introspection, communicating awareness of self in relation to others, recognizing value of supervision, etc.)
  • Infant mental health endorsement preferred.

    Georgia Department of Public Health Commissioner and  leaders encourages all employees to engage in regular wellness activities and to make lifestyle choices that promote health and well-being.

    The use of wellness breaks during the workday is authorized to support this philosophy and assist employees in meeting their wellness goals.  A maximum of 30 minutes in a given workday may be used to engage in wellness activities, generally in the form of two 15-minute breaks or one 30-minute break.

    Employment Information

    All approved teleworking employees must reside within the state of Georgia and depending on the responsibilities of the position, must live within reasonable driving distance of the agency’s primary worksite and be able to report to the office when required.

    Current State employees are subject to State Personnel Board rules regarding salary.

    DPH accepts educational credential recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and / or the US Department of Education (DOE) will be considered. DPH will contact educational institutions to verify degree, diploma, licensure, etc.

    The candidate selected for this position may be subject to pre-employment drug screening and a criminal background check.
