POSITION SUMMARY
Are you looking for the opportunity to do more with your Veterinary Technician degree? Would you like to manage the medical care of shelter animals under the direction of our shelter Veterinarians? Our Shelter Veterinary Technician is primarily responsible for meeting the health care needs of NCAL’s dogs and cats. The individual in this position is charged with providing each incoming animal with a basic health evaluation, ensuring that they receive necessary vaccines and treatments, providing surgical support during spay/neuter and other procedures and coordinating care outside of the shelter as needed. Our Veterinary Technician will also be responsible for training animal care staff and interns in animal handling and restraint, basic medical procedures, as well as medical care protocols.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Create health care and treatment plans through the consult and recommendations of NCAL’s veterinarian of record.
- Implement health care and isolation protocols aimed at minimizing disease risk and human exposure and maintain shelter population health;
- Communicate with the staff and volunteers regarding animal’s health status changes and the protocol changes that follow.
- Manage examination of animals upon intake to evaluate overall health status;
- Perform safe, humane handling and restraint of all animals making every effort to minimize stress and ensure staff safety;
- Administer vaccines, medications and treatments as needed, and draw blood for tests as needed;
- Train animal care staff to ensure they are giving proper medical care, performing safe animal handling and restraint, and following both medical and sanitation protocols;
- Design protocols to minimize disease exposure and cross contamination and work with the Animal Care Coordinators to communicate protocols to staff, interns and volunteers.
- Perform daily rounds with Animal Care Coordinators to monitor physical and behavioral health of all animals in the shelter, and to form plans for animals that need further care;
- Accurately maintain and organize animal medical files.
- Assist NCAL’s veterinarian with all on-site surgeries and procedures
- Schedule appointments for spay/neuter and community veterinary clinics.
- Train staff to effectively communicate medical information to adopters, and answer medical related questions and concerns with the public;
- Assist with stray and surrender intakes.
- Work with transport partners on selecting animals to offer for adoption at NCAL.
- Keep inventory of medications, tests, prescription diets, vaccines, flea products and med room supplies and place orders as needed;
- Maintain contact with supply company sales representatives and make contact with new companies to find ways to save costs on medical supplies;
- Code all medical supplies and medical bills, and keep track of medical line items;
- Maintain and service all medical equipment in spay/neuter room;
- Other responsibilities as directed.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- At least three years of experience in a veterinary hospital or humane/animal welfare organization providing direct animal medical care, with proficiency in anesthesia monitoring, surgical prep, animal restraint, venipuncture, vaccination, oral & intramuscular injections, medications, urinalysis, and fecal floatation;
- Certified Veterinary Technician preferred;
- Exemplary organizational skills;
- Adept and flexible multi-tasking abilities;
- Ability to flex schedule as needed to cover community clinics and events.
