JOB TITLE: Parent Support Partner
LOCATION: Gaylord, MI, 49735
REPORTS TO: Director of Children and Family Services
STATUS: Part-time (28 hrs.), Non-Union, Non-Exempt
HYBRID ELIGIBLE: This is a Community-Based position
STARTING WAGE RANGE: $19.04 - $19.99 per hour
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: High school graduate or GED
Experience: One year experience working with the target population is preferred, but other combinations of experience will be considered. Must be a parent or primary caregiver that is raising or has raised a child with emotional, behavioral and/or mental health challenges and or intellectual/developmental disabilities.
Other: Ability to facilitate group dialog and conversation and has some experience in public speaking and training. Must have ability to use basic computer skills. Ability to interact with physicians and other healthcare providers in a professional manner.
SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES: The Parent Support Partner (PSP) will work in partnership with the Therapist, Family Support Specialist and children’s treatment team to assist families to bridge the relationship between parent and professional and to support family & youth voice. The PSP will assist in developing and facilitating a local Parent Advisory Committee.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Provides peer delivered support to parents of youth with Severe Emotional Disturbance and/or Intellectual Developmental Disabilities in the public mental health system
- Facilitates access to the spectrum of services and assists with systems navigation
- Teaches parenting skills to manage day-to-day challenges of raising children with SED, IDD, or autism.
- Works individually with families whose children are receiving CMH services and who need additional supports and skill building to reach their goals
- Builds and nurtures relationships with the family and others providing services and support.
- Provides information and support to parents and family members who are participating in family-centered practices, person centered planning and in treatment, services and supports
- Uses their own experience and additional information to assist parents in understanding their child’s diagnosis, supports and services available
- Participates in family-centered practice, person centered-planning process, and assists in development of goals related to Parent to Parent support in the plan of service
- Provides information to the family so they can make informed choices on what is best for their child and family. Supports parents and family member to speak for themselves
- Provides education and training to and assist families in preparing for meetings regarding their child
- Links the family, based on strengths and cultural interest, with activities and groups in the community
- Facilitates or assists facilitator in parenting groups intended to increase parenting skills or increase system navigation skills
- Other duties as assigned by the Director of Children and Family Services
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to walk, bend, stand, sit, lift to 25 pounds with or without assistance, stretch/reach, hear, see, hand/finger dexterity and drive a vehicle. Position requires physical ability to complete and maintain certification in CPI techniques which will be a training class provided to the job incumbent. OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be able to obtain and maintain the MDHHS Parent Support Partner certification or be in the process of certification within the first 6 months of employment.
- Must be current in Adult CPR and First Aid; provided by NCCMH.
- Complete initial training in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (CPI); provided by NCCMH.
- Have own phone for communication and reliable access to messages.
- Have reliable transportation in carrying out agency duties.
- Possess a valid Michigan’s driver’s license and have a satisfactory driving record.
- Supports a philosophy of service delivery that is recovery-based, person centered and culturally competent.
- Adhere to applicable policies and procedures as required by the Department of Community Mental Health, the Mental Health Services Board, and other pertinent regulatory agencies.
- Well-organized and self-directed, with the ability to manage time in an efficient manner to meet deadlines and accomplish work in order of priority with attention to detail and accuracy.
