Position Statement:
In accordance with directives from the providers of the Cardiology department, the office nurse coordinates and administers nursing care for medical patients of all ages who present to the practice for care. Participates in providing informational education to patients or caregivers. Contributes to the assessment of the health status of the individuals. Participates in the development and modification of the strategy of care for individuals. Maintains safe and effective nursing care rendered directly in indirectly. Works cooperatively with other patient team personnel in maintaining standards for professional nursing practice in the physician office setting.
Key Responsibilities:
- Receives and greets patients in a professional and friendly manner. Participates in the establishment of the immediate need and details of past medical history and prepares the patient for the exam. Responsible for checking vital signs, checks allergies and goes over the medication list with the patient. Alerts provider regarding compliance with medications.
- Explains normal and abnormal test/lab results to the patients. Educates patients regarding medications. Works in conjunction with Case Management, Chronic Care Coordinators to facilitate comprehensive cardiology care for patients.
- Schedules and processes paperwork for patient tests, cardiac catheterizations and other invasive procedures, labs, device procedures or office appointments. Calls in prescriptions. Arrange hospital admissions. Provides patient education on invasive and non-invasive procedures and diagnostic tests.
- Inform patients of lab results or new orders as directed by the physician.
- Refill prescriptions as directed by the physician.
- Triages appointment referrals to ensure patients are being seen in a timely manner. Triages phone calls and clinical questions.
- Schedules patients for referrals and sends necessary documents to the referring office.
- Assists with the development of clinical processes, procedures and workflows with the Practice Director and Medical Provider.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Valid RN/LPN License, 1-2 years clinical experience in an office setting preferred.
- Documentation in patients’ chart is done through the EMR, requires an understanding of the EMR or the ability to learn and comprehend.
- An ability to greet and interact with the public in a tactful, compassionate manner.
- Essential is the ability to maintain a positive attitude while integrating and closing multiple tasks, meeting deadlines, and prioritizing as circumstances indicate or as requested by the Practice Manager. Individual must be ethical, honest, and responsible.
