Position Statement
The Medical Technologist performs moderate to high complexity laboratory testing in the areas of Hematology, Chemistry, Blood Bank, Microbiology, Toxicology and Urinalysis. They support patient safety and high-quality clinical outcomes through precise specimen analysis, interpretation, and reporting. The Medical Technologist uses their expertise to ensure test results are accurate and reliable, providing crucial insights to guide medical decisions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Selects, performs, evaluates, and monitors the performance of moderate to high complexity testing procedures using manual and/or instrumental techniques in all laboratory sections and in accordance with established protocols.
- Complies with established safety and infection control procedures.
- Recognizes and reacts to indicators of test malfunction; applies appropriate troubleshooting technique; documents action taken.
- Evaluates the suitability of the specimen for analysis, requesting new specimen if determined to be unusable.
- Evaluates the validity of data in relation to the test system and accepted assay procedures. Correlates quantitative and qualitative data with patient data (i.e., history, medications) to verify results.
- Practices ethical standards in all matters relating to patient medical information.
- Maintains competence and displays initiative for professional growth relating to trends and advancements in laboratory science.
- Performs phlebotomy as needed.
- Ability to work independently on varied shifts to include nights, weekends, or holidays.
- Other duties within scope as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Requires American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Board Certification as a Medical Technologist MT(ASCP) or Medical Laboratory Scientist MLS (ASCP) or equivalent nationally recognized credentials.
- Baccalaureate degree in Medical Laboratory Science or a baccalaureate in a biological science or chemistry with approved Medical Laboratory Scientist training is preferred.
- Non-traditional route to established skill level may be accepted after review of education and experience. Must include completion of a NAACLS accredited program with clinical internship within 2 years of hire to establish eligibility. National certification to occur within 1 year of eligibility.
- Ability to work well under pressure and handle difficult situations with empathy and professionalism.
