Position Statement:
Coordinates and administers nursing care for medical practice patients under the direction of a healthcare provider. Maintains a cooperative working relationship with other team personnel and maintain standards of professional nursing practice, striving to meet the goals of the practice and NCH. Maintains the standards of behavior and nursing care standards while implementing the policies and procedures of the hospital.
Key Responsibilities: (this should contain no more than 10 bullets)
- Receives and greets patients in a professional and friendly manner. Ascertains patient’s needs, Obtains history of current complaint and details of past medical history. Responsible for checking vital signs, allergy history, and current medication list, and reporting all pertinent medical information into the electronic medical record according to established rules and requirements.
- In accordance with directives from health care providers, implements minor procedures, treatments, screening tests, and administers medications and vaccines.
- Courtesy speaks with patients or healthcare providers who call the office with medical concerns, assessing patients with physical complaints and making appropriate recommendations based on that assessment, including recommending the patient be seen in the office or in the emergency room. Follows up on telephone contacts as needed. Makes providers aware of all such decisions through discussion and/or messages in electronic medical record.
- Reviews and assists maintenance of patient’s electronic medical record. Documenting all data collected and procedures performed in any patient's electronic medical record.
- Informs patients of lab results or new orders as directed by healthcare provider.
- Orders prescription refills as directed by healthcare provider and performs various lab studies under the direct supervision of the healthcare provider.
- Assists healthcare providers with special tests and procedures.
- Assist with or institute emergency measures for sudden adverse developments in patients such as preterm labor, severe bleeding, ETC.
- Is responsible for the daily preparation and upkeep of the exam rooms. Runs controls on lab equipment according to CLIA requirements.
- Participates in economical utilization of supplies and ensures that equipment is maintained in a clean and safe manner.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Graduation from an accredited medical assistant program. One to two years clinical experience in an office setting preferred. An ability to greet and interact with the public in a tactful, compassionate manner. An ability to work in a busy office while maintaining a cooperative and professional attitude.
- Computer literacy: patient charts are maintained in electronic format. Documentation requires understanding of the current program and how to use it.
- Physical demands manual dexterity and use of equipment. Good or corrected vision and hearing.
- Exposure: May be exposed to infectious and contagious disease. Regularly exposed to the risk of blood borne diseases.
