North Country School seeks an experienced full-time School Nurse for the remainder of the 2024-25 school year. In this role, you will apply your deep understanding of medical conditions and treatments, as well as state rules and regulations as you oversee the general health and wellbeing of a population of between 80-90 students during the school year ranging in age from 7-15.

What You Will Do

As an integral part of the health team, you will provide support and health services to students, as well as adult members—faculty and staff—of the North Country School community. Each day will involve using your assessment skills, triage, medication passes, and being on-call after hours.

How You Will Spend Your TimeHealth Office Management (75% of time)

In support of and in partnership with other team members of the health office, the largest portion of your work will be spent managing the health office to ensure the health and wellbeing of our students and staff. As a part of this, you will:

  • Plan and deliver relevant health training (1-2 hours) for staff in partnership with other health team members
  • Appropriately store medication and stock, as needed
  • Pass medication 2-3 times daily, along with administering as needed medications throughout the day
  • Assess, triage and treat student and camper injuries and illnesses
  • Promote health by supporting wellness activities in coordination with our mental health counselors
  • Develop and update health plans for students and campers with chronic health needs
  • Provide emergency care for students, faculty and staff when needed
  • Communicate with students, faculty, staff, and families regarding relevant health issues
  • Hold the on-call phone throughout the day and evening for any emergency calls
  • Ensure a safe environment that complies with health laws
  • Pack medication kits for off-campus trips

General Office Work (15% of time)

An important part of this position will include supporting health office operations. This includes managing and executing day-to-day tasks such as documenting and logging medications and treatment notes, coordinating appointments for students while communicating with families, and consulting and collaborating with other health team members and the leadership team, as needed. Additionally, you will also develop and maintain health policies and procedures, including reviewing immunizations, in compliance with the New York State Department of Health (NYS DOH).

Health Appointments (10% of time)

A small piece of your role will require you to coordinate, organize, and attend health appointments with students. This will require you to organize and bring needed documents, drive students to and from the health center, urgent care, or emergency room where the appointment is, and collaborate with consulting healthcare team members upon arrival. Post-appointment, you will also be required to log information into our computerized health systems and inform appropriate people of health plans.
