Summary of Work

The Division of Juvenile Services (DJS) is the administrative agency directed to take custody of delinquent and unruly children committed to its care by the juvenile courts. The Community Services staff provide comprehensive case management as well as community based correctional services to youth who are placed across the continuum of care. This position directs staff selection and supervises, trains and mentors Youth Corrections Officers (YCO), Administrative Assistants and Case Aides with existing Lead Youth Corrections Officers. This position is assigned oversight of specific programs and acts as a liaison with professional partners and agencies. This position reviews Individual Treatment and Rehabilitation plans and monitors public safety by providing the YCO guidance in assessing risk/needs and appropriate levels of care and/or placement. This position reports to the Chief of DJS Community Operations. Develop and maintain positive professional working relationships with court, county social services, human service centers, their regional offices, and other relevant agencies within the community. Provide crisis intervention and emergency services to YCO, Case Aides, youth and families on an as-needed basis. Assist Chief of DJS Community Operations with coordinating of hiring efforts with the DJS Human Resource Manager, ensuring that proper procedure for recruitment, interviews, and selection of candidates is followed.

This position supervises the Williston, Dickinson, Minot and Bismarck regional offices.

Duties and Tasks

  • Develop and maintain positive professional working relationships with court, county, zones, law enforcement and human service resources.
  • Supervise and provide daily guidance for Youth Corrections Officers case management duties of high-risk youth, families and young adults.
  • Provide crisis intervention in your region to the division staff, and other agencies, youth and families as needed and when necessary.
  • Ongoing progress monitoring through face-to-face meetings, phone calls, and meeting on appropriate treatment and services for youth under DJS custody.
  • Complete documentation required by central office, court, zones and other agencies involved in youth programs.
  • Prepare and review staff time sheets and travel reimbursements on a timely basis.
  • Provide updated information to the HR Manager and Chief of DJS Community Operations on hiring of personnel, staff issues, staff training, recruiting, interviews and selection of candidates.
  • Involvement and potential implementation of progressive disciplinary actions with Administrative staff, YCO, Case Aides or as directed by the Chief of DJS Community Operations.
  • Managing office patterns of coverage, communication, and public safety concerns. Supervising YCO with case management of youth and young adults. Ensuring staff and community safety, Assisting staff during times of crisis or emergencies.

Minimum Qualifications

Requires a bachelor's degree in social work, psychology, counseling, sociology, criminal justice, or closely related field and three years of community management experience and two years of community case management of high-risk youth or services to a similar population.
