Summary of Work

The purpose of this position is to perform preliminary surveys utilizing advanced surveying principles for photogrammetric control and conventional location surveys on a statewide basis for use in the design of highways and bridges.

Operate Survey Equipment:

  • Operate modern survey equipment including drones equipped with sensors, Global Positioning System (GPS), Total Station, level, and data collector to collect survey data. Conduct proper maintenance and software updates.
  • Operate surveying equipment and instruments in a manner to ensure effective use of equipment.
  • Utilize equipment and methods to ensure accurate and precise survey data consistent with professional standards.
  • Work with state plane coordinate system (SPCS) and convert SPCS data to ground coordinates.
  • Work with feature codes in data collector used to represent topographic data using Department Standards.
  • Ensure proper survey styles are created within data collectors.
  • Solve operational problems which arise with survey equipment.

Conduct Field Survey:

  • Identify the correct survey method and procedure needed to support the survey.
  • Identify and collect coordinate data on manmade and physical features on highway projects, locating underground and surface utilities, and collecting digital terrain model (DTM) data.
  • Locate and/or establish horizontal and vertical control points for project control using GPS and Total Station equipment.
  • Locate and/or establish highway alignment points such as right-of-way monuments and centerline points using old plans and plats.
  • Keep field notes of survey as needed so conclusions arrived from the field survey will be supported.
  • Set aerial targets on selected control points for aerial sensory data collection.
  • Conduct Online Positioning User System (OPUS) surveys for establishing project control.
  • Conduct one-call utility requests and make appropriate follow ups to ensure all utility lines are marked for data collection.

Boundary Surveys:

  • Assist in research of highway plans and right of way plats.
  • Assist in research of Land Survey Monument (LSM) recordation forms, parcel and tract plats, and General Land Office (GLO) field notes through online resources and in county courthouses.
  • Assist in field recovery surveys for public land survey corners using General Land Office (GLO) field notes, right-of-way plats, highway plans, existing Land Survey Monument (LSM) recordation forms, and recorded parcel and tract plats.
  • Assist in establishing monumentation of public land survey corners.
  • Assist in setting bearings and distances for reference ties to the Public Land Survey System (PLSS).
  • Assist in the collection of coordinate data for existing monumentation of property boundaries and public land survey corners.

Minimum Qualifications

High School (or GED) and four years of land surveying work experience and/or education in a related field. Ability to write Land Surveyor Intern exam as specified by the Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors. Requires a class D driver's license for travel to meetings and project locations.

Education Substitution for Experience:

  • A Land Surveying Technology Certificate (42 credits) = 1.5 years
  • Classes needed include drafting, GIS, Surveying (4), Statistics, computers and composition.
  • The Land Surveying Technology associate's degree (60 credits) = 2 years
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field = 4 years
