What are the responsibilities and job description for the Paleontologist position at North Dakota Dept. Of Mineral Resources?
Summary of Work
- This position will take a leading role in planning and implementing the Public Fossil Dig program during the summer, coordinate the paleontology program's science communication and outreach efforts, and assist with fossil preparation.
- The selected candidate will spend extensive time in the field in the summer working with the public to recover fossils from Cretaceous through Oligocene rocks in North Dakota, including long days and some weekends.
- They will maintain the paleontology program's website and social media accounts and conduct in person and online outreach activities related to the paleontology and geology of North Dakota.
- They will assist in the fossil preparation lab working on fossils ranging in age from the Late Cretaceous to Holocene, with an emphasis on vertebrate fossils.
- The candidate will also assist with field surveys and excavations at research sites as needed.

Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Geology, Biology, or a field relevant to Paleontology or Museum Studies.
- Experience conducting science communication related to paleontology and/or geology.
- Experience organizing and leading paleontological fieldwork.
- Strong verbal communication skills. Applicant must have a valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Geology or a field relevant to Paleontology or Museum Studies.
- Experience preparing vertebrate fossils.
- Experience with 3D scanning and/or printing fossils.
- Experience driving vehicles off paved roads and towing trailers.
- Computer experience with working knowledge of MS Office applications (Access, Excel, Word, Outlook). Experience working with video and/or audio editing software.
