What are the responsibilities and job description for the Chateau de Mores Site Interpreter position at North Dakota Historical Society?
Summary of Work
The Chateau team works together to ensure a pristine experience for every visitor through excellent interpretation and efficient maintenance work. We hope you can join us in this endeavor!
Job Duration: Flexible! April/May through September. Weekly work hours 20-40 preferred, hours subject to negotiation.
The historical interpreter will execute their responsibilities with a positive attitude, neat appearance, and enthusiasm. The successful applicant will:
- Actively listen to visitors, answer their questions, welcome and orient them, lead hands-on activities, assist with special events, and participate in roving and stationed interpretation.
- Interpret site history enjoyably and accurately, making good use of research, training, appropriate language and hands-on skills.
- Assess and provide for visitors' special needs, such as appropriate services for the elderly, handicapped, and foreign visitors.
- Provide excellent customer service.
- Assist with store operations that includes keeping merchandise neatly displayed and dusted, keeping track of inventory, and operating and reconciling the cash register, while following policies and procedures.
- Clean and tidy facilities including work areas, public areas, and bathrooms. Perform other light maintenance tasks which might include watering and weeding garden spaces, dusting, and emptying trash receptacles.
- Familiarize visitors with the State Historical Society mission and its other state historic sites.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be at least 16 years old.
- Ability to communicate with groups and individuals of diverse ages, interests, and perspectives, using appropriate language and hands-on skills.
- Ability to learn site history.
- Ability to work flexible work hours and weekends.
- Ability to accurately complete required forms such as timesheets, till counts, etc.
- Self-motivated

About the Chateau de Mores State Historic Site
Located in Medora, North Dakota, named one of the most beautiful small towns in America by Travel Leisure, the Chateau de Mores State Historic Site interprets the ambitions of the Marquis de Mores in Dakota Territory. Our interpretive center serves guests as a place to learn the story of the Marquis and his family, share local and regional travel information, and enjoy unencumbered views of Historic Medora. Guests step back in time when visiting the original Chateau and outbuildings, they can stroll the wooded path through some of the Marquis' ranch holdings, and picnic in the shadows of his abattoir ruins.
