The purpose of this position is to serve as the academic advisor for a caseload of students. As part of the Career and Advising Center team, specifically part of the academic advising team, this person will be integral in assisting students achieve their academic, career, and personal goals through developmental, proactive, and holistic individual and group interactions, registration and other academic planning, and collaborating with other campus resources for appropriate referrals. This person will also closely collaborate with department faculty and staff contacts of students they serve, forming in-depth information channels with specific departments and colleges. This position reports to the Lead Advisor in their academic area.
Details :
- Provide academic advising services based on the NACADA Core Competencies guiding framework.
- Advise a caseload of students (typically new, transfer, primarily first and second year students) with understanding of academic curriculum including selection of courses, major fit, policies and procedures; and support advisees with campus resources and referrals.
- Assist students with academic planning and registration beginning at summer orientation registration sessions and subsequently throughout their time at NDSU leading up to a transition point to a faculty advisor.
- Assist students with academic difficulty, including providing proactive outreach and other strategies to improve academic performance.
- Refer students as needed to other student support services (financial aid, counseling, center for writers, etc.).
- Discuss career goals, outcomes, and resources with students utilizing Handshake, FOCUS2, and other available resources.
- Maintain frequent outreach and timely communication with students and scale it based on recorded student support need.
- Utilizing the NDSU co-curricular model, help students identify and understand opportunities to maximize their student experience at NDSU to positively impact their communities.
- Meet with students interested in changing majors.
- Provide supplemental academic and career advising for walk-in, email, and phone call inquiries.
- Regularly use official student success platform, Campus Connection, Outlook, and other resources to accurately record student interactions including appointments held and appropriate notes / reports and degree progress.
- Ensure all advisees' plans of study are within student success software.
- Participate in outreach campaigns including departmental, college, and university-wide that includes various types of student outreach including emailing, calling, follow up, and reporting on results.
- Participate in ongoing training for accurate information on innovative and effective advising and career development techniques.
- Maintain regular involvement with faculty, administrators, and related campus offices (Registration & Records, Student Success Programs, etc.) for academic curriculum, policy / procedure and other pertinent updates.
- Support and engage, as appropriate, with major admission events (Discover Days, National College Fair, etc.).
