General Purpose
Acts a back up for Cook. Assure food delivery to classrooms and prepare meals per USDA and Head Start standards.To ensure the compliance of the performance standards in the preparation, storage, and cleanup of meals provided. Kitchen sanitation and assistance with food preparation.
Essential Functions
- Direct the preparation of meals per day that meet Federal, state, and local USDA nutrition requirements.
- Prepares and submits monthly meal count and attendance records.
- Works with Family Advocates to maintain required enrollment and attendance documentation on all participants, as it relates to the Child Care Food Program.
- Develop and follow standardized recipes, and use portion control methods, including the weighing/measuring of meal components.
- Ensure that meals are prepared on schedule.
- Use appropriate guidelines for estimating amounts to be prepared, utilizing leftovers for subsequent child meals wherever possible and ensuring that extra food or leftovers are distributed or disposed of per policy.
- Perform weekly food inventory and place order to Central Office for items needed.
- Ensure that special diets (as determined by Health Service Specialist) are adhered to.
- Use food production and food storage procedures that are in compliance.
- Plan and complete routine cleaning and maintenance of kitchen and equipment.
- Wash and sanitize utensils and dishes thoroughly, assist with classroom cleanup.
Other Job Functions
- Plan work schedule so that food production flows smoothly.
- Maintain proper hygiene and dress requirements for food service staff.
- Help to integrate the kitchen into classroom programs by participating in nutrition education activities.
- Ensures all cleaning materials are kept secure and out of reach of children.
- Performs other duties as assigned
Management Level & Responsibilities
- This position has no supervisory or management responsibilities.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Required
- Knowledge of quantity food preparation, equipment, and food purchasing.
- Basic proficiency of Microsoft Suite programs.
- Must have strong organizational skills. Ability to effectively organize multiple tasks and projects.
- Ability to meet deadlines.
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and embrace the cultural diversity of children and families.
Preferred
- Ability to work independently.
- Become familiar with NFCD’s safety protocols.
Qualifications – Education & Experience
Licenses or Certifications
Current Food Handler's Card
Complete Florida’s Department of Children and Families – Universal Precautions, Health & Nutrition Courses
Maintain a current infant/toddler/young child CPR and First Aid Certifications

Work Experience
Required: 6 months in Food Service related field
Preferred:
Level of Physical Effort
- High level of daily repetitive motion with hands and arms in food preparation, serving and cleaning activities.
- Continuous standing and walking for most of an 8-hour work day.
- Frequent daily bending and lifting of up to 50 lbs., items are lifted from floor and work tables/counters.
- Regular crouching occurs to retrieve items from lower shelves.
- Regular reaching occurs to retrieve utensils and food items from storage shelves and cupboards up to 8’ high.
Physical Working Environment
- Occasional hazards that are predictable or well protected against (Hazardous waste, ladders, cleaning supplies, trips and falls)
- Regular exposure to heat and noise
Background
- Must be able to pass a background check.
- Must be able to pass a drug screen.
- Must be able to provide references for the previous 5 years work experience.
Additional
Contingency:
- Employment with NFCD is contingent upon an annual appropriation by the Legislature, federal funding, and successful implementation of job requirements, as measured by performance-based evaluations. In the event the federal, state, and/or local funds upon which employment is dependent are withdrawn or redirected, employment may be terminated and NFCD shall have no further liability to the employee beyond that already incurred prior to the termination date. NFCD is an at-will company.
