Job Title: Preschool Special Education Assistant (Non-Certified)
Reports To: Building Principal and Special Education Teacher
Job Summary:The Preschool Special Education Assistant provides support to students with disabilities in a preschool setting. This role involves assisting the special education teacher in implementing instructional activities, supporting individualized education plan (IEP) goals, and promoting a positive and inclusive learning environment. The assistant works closely with students to develop social, communication, and academic skills while ensuring their safety and well-being.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist in the implementation of IEP goals by reinforcing instructional activities designed by the special education teacher and related service providers.
- Support students with daily routines, including arrival, transitions, meals, toileting, and dismissal.
- Provide individualized and small-group support to students, ensuring engagement and participation in learning activities.
- Utilize appropriate strategies to support communication, sensory, and behavioral needs, including implementing behavior intervention plans (BIPs) as directed.
- Encourage the development of self-help skills, independence, and appropriate social interactions.
- Assist with the supervision of students in the classroom, playground, and other school settings to ensure a safe and structured environment.
- Adapt and modify classroom materials under the direction of the special education teacher to meet student needs.
- Collaborate with teachers, therapists, and other staff to support student learning and development.
- Maintain confidentiality of student records and information in compliance with school policies and special education regulations.
- Attend professional development and training sessions as required by the district.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the principal or special education teacher.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; associate’s degree or coursework in early childhood education, special education, or a related field is desirable.
- Experience working with young children, particularly those with disabilities, is highly desirable.
- Ability to follow directions and work collaboratively as part of a team.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively support students and interact with staff and families.
- Patience, flexibility, and a compassionate approach to working with children with diverse needs.
- Ability to lift and assist students as needed and perform physical tasks related to supporting young children.
- Willingness to complete any required training related to special education, behavior management, or early childhood education.
Working Conditions:
- Work is performed in a preschool classroom and school environment.
- Requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and lifting students when necessary.
