                                                                Job Description for High School Counselor

 

Department:          Instructional                                              

Job Status:            Full Time

FLSA Status:          Exempt                                                     

Reports To:            Building Principal

Grade/Level:          9-12                                                             

Amount of Travel Required: Minimal travel may be required if in conjunction with pre-approved professional development activities

Positions Supervised: None

Work Schedule: 207-day contract, Monday through Friday; hours per day as set by the building Principal

POSITION SUMMARY

The Secondary School Counselor will oversee the successful implementation of the school counseling program in accordance with all applicable state and District guidelines.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 

  • Follows and maintains knowledge of all District policies and procedures.
  • Provides individual and small group counseling.
  • Assists students in making course and subject selections, as well as with evaluating career interests and choices.
  • Assists with the state-mandated testing program.
  • Assists in the scheduling of classes.
  • Assists students with admissions, scholarships, and identifying employment opportunities.
  • Assists with the registration and orientation of students who are new to the school regarding procedures and educational opportunities.
  • Assists with the District’s dropout prevention efforts.
  • Is aware of and abides by laws protecting a student’s right to privacy.
  • Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops, or professional meetings or by conducting research and by maintaining professional relationships with members of institutions of higher learning and the business community.
  • Encourages parental involvement in students’ education and ensures effective communication with students, parents, and teachers.
  • Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete recordkeeping and providing student information to prospective colleges and employers, as required by District procedures and applicable laws.
  • Provides counseling activities to assist students with educational, social, and career adjustment and planning.
  • Promotes better understanding of the student and his educational, social, and career development and planning.
  • Refers students to outside agencies or professional individuals when mental health needs warrant.
  • Serves as a ready resource to students to provide counseling that will lead each student to increased personal growth, self-understanding, and maturity.
  • Organizes Master Schedule and can navigate E-school effectively and efficiently.

Education

 

Minimum of a Master's Degree with a valid Arkansas Teacher's License with Guidance and Counseling certification, in addition to being a Highly Qualified Teacher meeting Arkansas Department of Education standards.

  

Experience

 

Three to five years of teaching experience

 

SKILLS & ABILITIES

   Computer Skills

Basic technology proficiency, with the ability to learn and implement district teacher technology to include grade reporting and parental communication technology (Grade Quick, Ed Line Programs) Certificates & Licenses

Valid Arkansas Teacher's License with appropriate certification, in addition to being a Highly Qualified Teacher in accordance with Arkansas Department of Education requirements.       

  

Other Requirements

Appreciation for diversity. Ability to pass required ASP/FBI/DHS background checks.
