The Assistant High School Principal is directly responsible to the Principal for any and all aspects of
instructional leadership, administration, discipline and coordination. Serves as the instructional leader in the
school, administers the daily operations, and supervises the activities of the faculty and students.
Essential Functions:

● Assist the Principal in the organization, supervision, discipline, and administration of the school and to
assume responsibility for the school in the absence of the Principal when directed.
● Help supervise the instructional program and to make suggestions to the Principal for improving
instruction.
● Direct administrative work involving special supervisors, department heads, and teachers.
● Work with the Principal in the improvement of the instructional program and inherent supervisory duties.
● Work in the area of curriculum organization and improvement.
● Assist, determine, develop and implement plans for staff development for the building that facilitates
professional growth and enhances the quality and efficiency of teaching.
● Assist the Principal in preparing the master schedule.
● Counsel and advise with teachers about professional problems.
● Provide leadership in screening and interviewing applicants including substitutes, and/or recommending of
applicants to be interviewed.
● Assist the Principal with the development of the annual budget.
● Serve on various committees to represent the high school at the direction of the Principal.
● Implement student achievement improvement efforts as required by state and national regulations and as
directed by the district. This will include but not be limited to school improvement plans, standardized
testing, remediation, collection and reporting of data as required, and the development of special schedules
and testing procedures as necessary.
● Collaborate with the district wide leadership team regarding new or changing instructional methods,
materials, strategies, and programs.
● Assist in assembly program development and related conferences with students, parents, and teachers.
● Cooperate actively in the promotion of the safety program of the school.
● Work with counselors, teachers, and the school nurses in problems with which they are concerned.
● Transmit to the Principal, in an effective manner, the opinions and suggestions of students and teachers.
● Assist in the preparation of reports.
● Assist the Principal with preparing referrals for student personnel services (e.g., health, student adjustment
services, suspensions).
● Assist the Principal in disseminating school information concerning school policies and practices to
students, parents and teachers.
● Represent the school in community functions in place of the Principal.
● Hold parental conferences as required.
● Take a leadership role in ordering, training, and proctoring of the state assessment system.
● Perform other relative duties delegated by the Principal.
Education and Qualifications:
A Masters of Education Degree from an accredited college or university is required. Prior high school experience
is preferred. At least five years of successful teaching and administrative experience with evidence of strong
leadership ability. The selected candidate must be licensed as a Principal/Assistant Principal (5-12) from the
Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
Ability and Experience:
Previous administrative experience is required. Prior experience with evaluation of staff. Good interpersonal skills
and ability to relate to pupils, parents, colleagues and the central office administration. Ability to engage students
and staff in the teaching-learning process.

machine and all other standard office equipment.
● Makes frequent contact with coaches, students, school department staff, parents, and outside agencies and
organizations.
● Has access to highly confidential student and school information.
● Errors could result in delay or loss of service or legal consequences.
