Patient Care: * Provide breastfeeding education and assistance to inpatients and outpatients of Women & Children’s Services * Facilitate breastfeeding education and lactation support group meetings * Assist and encourage staff with early initiation of skin to skin care * Complete assessment of patients with special breastfeeding needs/challenges; plans and coordinates care with other team members, and evaluates patient’s response to care * Documents all aspects of care provided Communication: * Communicates effectively with patients and family members * Maintains open communication with multidisciplinary team members to provide holistic care to the patient * Collaborate with neonatologists and the multidisciplinary NICU team to assist with early initiation of direct breastfeeding and the infant driven protocol for infants in the NICU Staff Education * Provides for staff competency through education provided in the Breastfeeding Management Classes, 5 hour CHAMPS Breastfeeding Clinical Competency Training and checkoffs, and ongoing/annual staff education regarding breastfeeding * Serve as preceptor for nurses during shift(s) scheduled for lactation orientation Patient Experience * Project professional, caring and helpful image to patients, family members and visitors * Plans care considering patient’s needs and preferences * Offer support for breastfeeding mothers of newborns after discharge by offering/overseeing breastfeeding support groups and/or informing patients of available community resources for lactation support Self-Development: * Maintain competency to ensure safe and effective patient care * Completes all annual competency requirements * Stays current with lactation practices and Baby Friendly initiatives Regulatory Knowledge: * Complies with regulatory and accrediting agency requirements * Adheres to NMHS/NMMC policies, procedures, and guidelines Job Knowledge: * Must be licensed as a registered nurse or speech therapist in the state of Mississippi * Must maintain certification as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) * Must maintain departmental requirements for continuing education, including certification in BLS * Must have effective communication and teaching skills * Must complete and validate all competency criteria for a registered nurse * Must maintain knowledge and resources necessary to provide age appropriate care * General knowledge of regulatory and accrediting agency standards
