Job Summary:
NOHN is seeking a compassionate and experienced Registered Nurse to join our Nursing Services Team in a new role as Stork Nurse, a perinatal nurse within the Primary Care setting. The ideal candidate will provide professional comprehensive patient centered care in collaboration with NOHN’s Obstetrics team to support parents through their pregnancy, postpartum, and the newborn period. This new role involves remote patient assessment, patient education, and collaboration within a multidisciplinary team to provide the best possible health outcomes for parents, babies, and families in our rural community. As a new role at NOHN you will have the opportunity to contribute to the stork program’s design.
The Stork Nurse Role is integral in assisting families to navigate the challenges of pregnancy and early parenthood while providing comprehensive care, compassionate support, and knowledgeable guidance to ensure the health and well-being of pregnant patients, babies, and their families.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Provide high quality nursing care within a clinical environment with emphasis on the pre-natal, postpartum, and newborn patient populations.

Be a nonjudgemental first-contact for patients with a positive pregnancy test, including offering options counseling for management, which might include referral to an outside organization for abortion care if ongoing pregnancy is not desired

Contact pregnant patients to review and document their medical history in a
trauma-informed manner while assessing needs, building rapport, and educating parents about what to expect during office visits.

Provide competent and professional remote patient assessment via telephone triage of pregnant, postpartum, and newborn patients. Documenting clearly in the electronic health record and collaborating with the Obstetric Providers for safe evidence based compassionate care.

Monitor and screen patients for risk factors, such as hypertension, gestational diabetes, infections, etc.

Assess parents after hospital discharge for concerns related to postpartum period to monitor recovery including uterine involution, infection, breast health, basic lactation, and emotional well-being.

Educate new parents on basic infant best care practices such as feeding, bathing, diapering, creating safe sleep environment, and the basics of monitoring a newborn's health.

Provide basic newborn assessments as needed monitoring: feeding patterns, jaundice levels, weight gain, etc.

Educate and support parents on best practices for feeding newborns and offer support and knowledge for basic breastfeeding concerns and community lactation resources for feeding challenges.

Educate parents regarding healthy lifestyle and disease prevention strategies for a healthy pregnancy to promote good health outcomes for mothers and infants.

Advocate for routine screenings and educate on immunizations for mothers and babies.

Encourage involvement with local programs involved in promoting good health outcomes for mother, child, and families.

Report any concerns to Primary Care Provider for further management.

Coordinate within multidisciplinary clinic team to support pregnant patients and new families to find resources within the community to assist in meeting SDOH needs.

Run reports within EHR, manage patient lists and spreadsheets for Obstetrics Teams needs.
Care Coordination and Collaboration:
-
Collaborate with Obstetrics Providers and multidisciplinary team to ensure high quality care for prenatal, postpartum, and neonatal visits.

Coordinate appropriate follow up care for prenatal and postpartum visits, testing, imaging, etc. especially for high-risk populations such as parents with substance use disorder (SUD), high Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) needs, and parents whose native language is not English.
Qualifications
Licensing:
Must have an active license as a Registered Nurse in Washington State in good standing.
Basic Life Support (BLS) required
Experience, knowledge, or certifications in lactation may be of benefit (IBCLC/ CLC).
Education: Bachelor’s preferred, Associates Degree in Nursing considered dependent on experience.
Experience:

Minimum 5 years nursing experience preferred.

Experience and or evidence of knowledge in obstetrics, maternal and child health, labor and delivery, neonatal, women’s health, or primary care nursing is highly desirable.
Skills:
-
Nursing knowledge and experience of caring for patients during Pregnancy, Postpartum, and/or Newborn period preferred.

Ability to assess and monitor maternal and neonatal health.

Strong communications skills required to assess patients health status both in person and remotely via telephone.

Proficient at navigating and documenting appropriate patient medical information within an electronic health record (EHR).

Ability to work both independently as well as collaboratively with Obstetric Providers and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
Language: Familiarity with use of interpretive services of benefit due to multiple languages used within the community, such as Spanish and Mam.
Physical Demands: May require prolonged sitting, standing, and some lifting of light objects (up to 20 lbs).
Work Environment: Fast-paced community health center setting, potential exposure to infectious diseases, interaction with diverse patient populations.
