JOB TITLE: Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Coordinator

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The EHS Coordinator is responsible for the oversight of all environmental compliance, health, and safety programs. Works with the corporate EHS Manager to develop, implement, and maintain written programs, inspection forms and guidelines, training curricula, policies and practices to ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements (such as OSHA, AK OSH, L&I, ADEC, EPA, DOT).
Apprises leaders of changes to regulations and practical approaches that ensure compliance. Provides training and guidance to all the departments in the plant. Completes and submits required permits and reports. Assists with workers compensation claims reduction and loss control initiatives. Regularly reviews production facility to audit programs and records, train staff and conduct physical inspections of the site. Maintains organized paper and electronic files of pertinent records.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Oversees all environmental compliance, health and safety programs throughout the plant.
- Develops, implements and updates written programs, inspection guidelines, forms, training materials, policies and practices to plant and meet or exceed regulatory requirements.
- Stays up to date on regulatory changes and initiatives and apprises managers and leaders of pertinent issues.
- Creates practical, proactive solutions for ensuring compliance with local, state and federal regulations.
- Conducts site specific training in areas of environmental compliance and industrial safety.
- Monitors plant records for completion and accuracy.
- Audits the facility continuously. Identifies deficiencies and areas for improvement, ranks in order of risk, sets deadlines and follows through to verify abatement.
- Acts as an in-house resource on technical issues within areas of responsibility.
- Implements initiatives to reduce and prevent work-related injuries and illnesses.
- Develops systematic paper and electronic records retention program.
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- 18 years old.
- Authorized to work in the U.S.
- EHS and Alaska seafood industry experience preferred.
- College degree preferred.
- Working knowledge of or ability to learn environmental and safety regulations that apply to seafood production in Alaska, such as air, wastewater, storm water, solid and hazardous waste regulations, use of ammonia refrigerants, industrial safety and hygiene. These include, but are not limited to, regulations promulgated by: EPA, ADEC, AK OSH, OSHA, DOT.
- Ability to research, read, comprehend, and articulate in laymans terms the meaning of regulations.
- Experience developing and delivering training to adult learners.
- Influential, collaborative, professional demeanor. Effective oral and written communications.
- Intermediate Microsoft Office skills (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook).
- Ability and willingness to live in Alaska and work in a seafood processing plant. This includes working in inclement weather and in seafood production plants (inherent hazards include moving machinery, wet floors, noise, forklift traffic, etc.).
- Consistent and reliable attendance is an essential function of this position.
WAGES
In Alaska, employees are paid overtime after eight regular hours in a day, and after 40 regular hours in a week.
NPSI provides transportation from the nearest major airport to the work location and back if you complete the season.
Employees live on site in communal bunkhouses with shared facilities, rooms are assigned based on gender identity, bed linens are provided. The cookhouse prepares hearty and nutritious meals and snacks. The housekeeping staff cleans and sanitizes restrooms and common areas. Laundry is done for employees once a week.
With no onsite expenses, and hopefully a large fish run, this is often a great way to make money in a relatively short period of time. There are additional opportunities for pay such as referral bonuses.

IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS
This work can be hard, monotonous, and boring. Most cell phones do not work in remote areas of Alaska. For Example: GCI cell phones are the most reliable in Naknek, while T-Mobile and Verizon occasionally work. Employees have access to pay phones at the plants. We provide free, limited access to a desktop computer to check email. We also have limited WiFi connection.
