What are the responsibilities and job description for the Corporate Safety Manager position at North Pacific Seafoods?
Our group of companies (known as the Canfisco Group) operate several seafood processing plants in the coastal areas of Alaska and in the greater Seattle area of Washington. We recently relocated our corporate office to a beautiful building in downtown Edmonds, a block from Main Street and within walking distance to the Edmonds waterfront. We employ over 3,000 people during our peak summer season. The Corporate Safety Manager provides leadership and oversight in all areas of workplace safety. Our processing work is seasonal and fish runs vary based on the specie and area of Alaska. To be successful the Safety Manager will need to spend time at each plant, with an emphasis on the summer months when all of our plants are in operation.
This is a highly technical position that requires excellent attention to detail and a positive, professional, and collaborative work style.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Works with plant personnel to develop, implement, and maintain written programs, inspection forms and guidelines, training curricula, policies and practices to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements (such as OSHA, AKOSH, L&I, and AKWCB).
- Apprises leaders of changes to regulations and practical approaches that ensure compliance.
- Serves as a consultant to our operations team, assisting them to maintain compliance and mitigate risks.
- Provides training and guidance to all levels of the organization in areas of responsibility.
- Completes and submits required reports.
- Initiates risk management and mitigation strategies to reduce worker’s compensation claims and increase plant safety and compliance.
- Visits production facilities at least annually to audit programs and records, train staff and conduct physical inspections of the site.
- Maintains organized paper and electronic files of pertinent records.
- Other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Qualified applicants must be:
- Authorized to work in the U.S.
- Bachelor's degree in industrial safety preferred (may be substituted by work experience).
- 5 years of similar safety related work experience, preferably in the Alaska seafood industry or other manufacturing settings.
- CSP certifications preferred.
- Working knowledge of safety regulations that apply to seafood production in Alaska and Washington, such as use of ammonia refrigeration, forklifts, small cranes, PPE, general industrial safety and hygiene. These include, but are not limited to, regulations promulgated by AKOSH, OSHA, L&I, USCG and DOT.
- Ability to research, read, comprehend, and articulate in layman’s terms the meaning of regulations.
- Experience in developing and delivering training to adult learners.
- Influential, collaborative, positive, professional demeanor. Effective oral and written communications.
- Advanced technical writing skills.
- Intermediate Microsoft Office skills (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, Teams).
- Ability and willingness to travel frequently to remote areas of Alaska and work in seafood processing plants for extended periods of time. Significant travel during the months of June, July and August to remote areas of Alaska.
