What are the responsibilities and job description for the Emergency Department Tech/CNA/Registration Clerk position at North Platte Valley Medical Center?
General Purpose: As a member of the Emergency Department Team, the ED Registration/CNA provides direct and indirect patient care through protocols set by North Platte Valley Medical Center to maintain safe and effective patient flow in the Emergency Room. The CNA works under the supervision of the ED Charge Nurse and the medical direction of the ED Provider and is accountable for providing care within established standards of practice. CNA maintains required certifications and skills by participating in continuing education, practical skills testing, and the re-certification processes set by the state of Wyoming. As part of this role, you will be required to the role of Registration Clerk. In this role you will be responsible for operating the phone system and giving directions to patients, visitors, guests, and sales representatives. Admitting patients, obtaining necessary information, and signatures, and completing admission forms. Assists with all business office duties as assigned by Supervisor.
Essential Job Functions
- Serves as the main registration personnel in the ED setting when patients present for care
- Performs duties and responsibilities within the scope of a CNA/EMT license as defined by the Wyoming Office of Emergency Services and North Platte Valley Medical Center policies and procedures.
- Receives and carries out orders from the ED Physician within scope of practices, and performs closed-loop communication with ED Charge Nurse.
- Collaborates within the ED team (CNAs, RNs, LPNs ED Techs) to deliver safe and efficient patient care.
- Acts as a liaison between the ED team and the patient/family, communicating frequently with patient/family to update information related to patient’s condition, status, progress, etc.
- In performing all duties and responsibilities, serves as a role model for service excellence and patient satisfaction.
- Assists patients to and from vehicles and the ER.
- Directs patient flow in the triage and reception areas of the ER with direction from ED charge nurse
- Communicates the condition of the patients presenting to the ER to the Charge Nurse.
- Transports patients from triage to the ER treatment area at the request of the charge nurse. Performs other patient transfers/transports as requested.
- Responds to patient/call lights in acute and ECF areas when needed.
- Stocks rooms/ED Bays
- Utilizes alternatives to restraints or applies restraints in compliance with NPVMC policies and practices.
- Promptly reads and utilizes communication materials, especially emails directed to ED staff.
- Operates telephone and paging system.
- Receives incoming calls. Ascertains nature of call and relays to proper location within facility.
- Maintains current list of patients by name and room number, list of emergency telephone numbers, and list of department extensions and names of key personnel.
- Receives, screens, and gives directions to patients, visitors, guests and sales representatives.
- Interviews patients and completes admitting information on various required forms. Obtains patient’s signature or that of responsible party on all required authorizations, permits and releases.
- Does miscellaneous typing, filing, and copying.
Required Qualifications
- Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Certification: CNA Licensure or higher. Will provide CNA training for the right candidate.
- Work Experience:
- 2-3 years in health care environment preferably as a Unit Clerk or CNA preferred
- Minimum of 1 years in computer systems or computer data entry
- Minimum of 2 years in customer service or patient services field
- Freedom from drugs and effects of the use of drugs and alcohol in the workplace.
- Persons who have been found guilty by a court of law of abusing, neglecting, or mistreating individuals in a health care-related setting, or who have been found guilty of embezzlement, are ineligible for employment in this position.
Working in a hospital creates a unique work environment of both confidentiality and hospitality. The addition of an Extended Care Facility to the organization creates a level of expectation for the behavior of the hospital CNA's when interacting with the residents on a daily basis. This is the resident’ home and as such requires an additional level of attention to detail from the staff. An interaction with staff, patients and patients families also occurs on a daily basis.
It is important the ED CNA's be aware of the various mistakes that can be made with a varying severity of consequences. These mistakes may include: Failure to use appropriate time management (leading to tasks being done in a hurried or incomplete manner), incomplete disinfection, and mistakes with resident documentation or care. Awareness of these issues alone may lead to limiting the mistakes made. It is important to keep in mind that the tasks associated with this role continually evolve to meet the demands of the facility and to keep with regulatory guidelines. These changes will be noted by the Emergency Department CNA direct supervisor. Regularly used equipment includes ECG Monitor, Cardiac Monitor, Gait belts, Hoyer Lift, Stethoscope, Thermometer, (digital and regular read-out), Wheelchairs, Walkers, blood-pressure cuffs, Oxygen regulators, Computers and telephone systems.
