Job Description:

Academic Counselor, Student Support and Advising Center

MCCC Unit Professional position, Grade 5

Campus Location: Lynn

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday: 9:00 am - 5:00 pm; 4 days on site, 1 day remote (telework is subject to change based on the needs of the department and/or College). There may be some evenings or weekends.

SALARY: Anticipated starting salary is $70,929.00 - $74,543.00. Actual salary will be commensurate with education and experience in accordance with the MCCC/MTA collective bargaining agreement. GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

The position provides equitable (e.g., developmental and appreciative, based on student and situation) advising to new, returning and transfer students to integrate their academic, personal, career and educational goals. This role is part of the Student Support and Advising Center services that are offered on each campus. The position requires in depth knowledge of the College's academic programs and policy information needed to advise students. The position works one-on-one, group advising and virtual and in-person registration events for students. The incumbent is responsible for assigned hours in the Centers and other locations as well as the virtual environment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Provide Holistic Academic Counseling
    • Assist students in making a program of study/guided pathway selections based on their academic and career goals.
    • Review and interpret placement information in relation to course selection. Provide students with strategies to meet communication and math proficiency requirements if necessary.
    • Create Academic Plan for student in Navigate to meet the student's stated goal and timeline for completion
    • Review Time Management needs and course formats to identify the best combination to ensure the student's success.
    • Participate in New Student Registration Events - create academic plans, acclimate students to NSCC tools, review onboarding process and review academic goals.
    • Facilitate workshops on a range of success strategies and advising topics
    • Meet with academic faculty to maintain program knowledge.
    • Connect students with college resources as necessary.
  • Provide Career Exploration Advising
    • Review Program of Study career objectives and career pathway.
    • Refer students to Career Exploration tools such as: MassCIS.
    • Refer students who are unsure of their college/career objective to exploratory coursework.
    • Conduct periodic check-ins with students to ensure career exploration tools are meeting their needs.
  • Provide Transfer Advising
    • Review Program of Study Choice to ensure that it best meets the transfer requirements.
    • Review transfer options (Mass Transfer, Commonwealth Commitment and other Articulation Agreements).
    • Conduct transfer presentations, in person or online, to affinity groups and classes. Connect students to online transfer resources to start the transfer process.
    • Explain requirements for Commonwealth Commitment. Review applications and approve/deny as needed.
    • Track Commonwealth Commitment applications and cohort to ensure successful participation and report out progress.
    • Attend statewide Transfer Meetings as directed by the supervisor.
    • Participate in Transfer Connections grant with Salem State University and Northern Essex Community College.
  • Retention/Outreach
    • Develop a communication plan for an assigned cohort of students designed to build engagement and collaboration.
    • Communicate using the following tools (phone, email, text, Navigate messaging, social media and in person meetings).
    • Regularly conduct appointment/enrollment campaigns using Navigate.
    • Review progress of assigned cohort on a regular basis to determine trends that may lead to academic probation. Proactively reach out to students in need of academic advising or support services.
  • Data Management
    • Record notes for all advising appointments in Navigate as well as any walk-in students.
    • Review progress of assigned cohort using Navigate's reporting and analytics functionality.
    • Participate in staffing of walk-in advising services
    • Staff regular shifts in Centro HUB (NSCC's virtual campus).
    • Maintain a regular on campus schedule to provide advising services for walk-in advising.
  • Participate in College Activities
    • Represents The Student Support and Advising Center at college events (Open Houses, Resources Fairs, Transfer Visits and Commencement.)
    • Attend College wide meetings
    • Participate in professional development opportunities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements:

  • Master's degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology or closely related field; with three (3) years' experience and/or training involving college admissions, academic advisement, career development, or program/project management; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to use various electronic platforms to communicate, assist and evaluate students.
  • Must have the ability to work some evening and Saturday hours.
  • Ability to work effectively within a fast-paced, rapidly growing, intense, and multifunctional office environment.
  • Strong presentation/instructional skills
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills.
  • Ability to commute to any NSCC campus for meetings, programs and events.
  • Successful experience interacting with culturally diverse populations.
  • Candidates will be required to pass a CORI/SORI and/or a National background check as a condition of employment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Working knowledge of Student Informational Systems desired. Knowledge of Banner preferred
  • Strong knowledge of the community college system working with individuals of diverse backgrounds.
  • Bilingual in Spanish is preferred.
