STATEMENT OF PURPOSE:
The Security Officer is responsible for effective and efficient operation and delivery of quality customer service throughout the hospital. Works with administrators, directors, managers, team leaders and team members to provide a safe and customer focused environment.
POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the general direction of the Security Manager, the Security Officer protects the life and property of all persons on hospital premises and patrols hospital buildings and grounds to prevent fire, theft, and vandalism. Secures, unlocks, and protects hospital buildings. Responds to security needs of the hospital personnel, patients, and visitors. Participate in performance improvement activities.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Contributes to the goals and objectives of the department and communicates with other departments to ensure necessary services are provided within established time frames; budgetary, staffing, and regulatory guidelines; and with quality consistent with department standards and customer expectations.
- Supports and is an active member of the Security Department, focusing on customer satisfaction, while responding to pressing needs.
- Actively supports and undertakes operation of proactive security, safety, life safety, and fire programs, to ensure appropriate delivery of security within budgetary, staffing, regulatory guidelines, quality, productivity and overall departmental standards and goals. Improves on and maintains accuracy of the security, safety and fire reporting system. Provides physical security service for assigned areas, gathers information and shares observations of quality with the department for corrective action.
- Ensures timely completion of all security incident reports, completing 90% of all security incident reports by the end of a shift. Completes 98% of all security incident reports within one working day of the security incident. 100% of all security incident reports are completed within two working days of the security incident.
- Greets all persons with a warm smile, while looking them in the eye. Answers all calls and requests with a professional and positive attitude.
- Safely and consistently conducts foot and mobile patrols. Keeps accurate records on property lost and found.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Protects the life and property of all persons on hospital premises. Deescalates all potentially tense situations. Immediately contact local police prior to any physical altercations.
- Patrols hospital buildings and grounds to prevent fire, theft, and vandalism. Diligently reports any suspicious activity and investigates accidents, incidents, and criminal acts.
- Secures, locks, and protects hospital buildings and grounds.
- Responds quickly and effectively to emergency and non-emergency situations.
- Ensures only authorized persons are admitted onto hospital property. Assists with inquiries made by patients, visitors, or other employees.
- Maintains current information in daily activity reports/logs, incident reports, lost and found logs, etc.
- Serves as a member of the emergency response team and responds to codes appropriately.
- Reports all safety and fire hazards, investigates incidents of unusual circumstances, and reports all incidents to the supervisor.
- Supports all fire/life safety/emergency management drills and education initiatives.
- Documents incident reports in an accurate and timely manner. Follows appropriate investigative procedures.
- Must be able to respond quickly to all areas of the hospital.
- Successfully completes hospital and department specific orientation and ongoing mandatory education requirements in a timely manner.
- Manage access control at various entrances by ensuring all staff, patients, visitors, and vendors are authorized to gain entry for business/service purposes.
- Assists with the operation of security systems: CCTV, access control, and incident reporting.
- Assists in maintaining regulatory requirements, including state and federal regulations.
- Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.
- Maintains a good rapport and a cooperative working relationship with physicians, staff, and vendors.
- Should an emergency situation arise (weather related or other emergency related events), senior management may require security staff to remain at the hospital in order to ensure the well-being of our patients is uncompromised, and hospital operations are uninterrupted. While these situations are unusual and at times unpredictable, our security staff should be prepared to remain on site.
- Remains keenly alert at all times, alerting all employees, patients, and others to possible threats or situations requiring immediate attention.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
- Experience: Two to five (2-5) years of experience in the field of law enforcement, security operations, or a related field is required. Experience in a health care setting is preferred.
- Certification/Licensure: A current Basic Life Support (CPR) American Red Cross or American Heart Association Provider certification or a CPI certification is preferred.
- Software/Hardware:
- Other: Must be able to successfully clear a background check, including a criminal search. Use or possession of a firearm and/or other weapons is prohibited.
EXPERIENCE
Minimum of two years in a health care or related field security position preferred.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
- Ability to be trained and to effectively use training in a team and customer focused environment.
- Demonstrated ability in security, safety and fire operations and concepts.
- Good working knowledge of proactive and reactive security, safety and fire programs.
- Conceptual understanding of the Security department's functions.
- Ability to execute verbal and written communications effectively.
- Ability to work comfortably with department systems and programs.
- Ability to work with and for people in a health care environment.
- Excellent knowledge of public safety and security procedures/protocols is preferred.
- Ability to obtain state-required security officer credentials, as needed.
- Ability to perform duties independently.
- Ability to communicate clearly in English, both verbally and in writing.
- Basic computer knowledge and skills are required. Experience with Microsoft Office preferred.
- Demonstrated an ability to function calmly and competently in high stress situations.
- The ability to display mental and emotional stamina in situations involving death, multiple patients, family members, etc.
- The ability to be honest, alert, and well-disciplined.
- Ability to lift and move up to 100 pounds.
- Proven ability to maintain confidentiality at all times.
