Summary or Purpose
Responds to emergencies and performs duties related to fire suppression, rescue and emergency care during ground ambulance and air ambulance transport as needed and other tasks appropriate and in accordance with level of training. Assists with supervision of shift operations; assist with overseeing assigned volunteer members and departmental training; travel to North Slope Villages as needed to provide support and training. This position is a regular member of the North Slope Borough Fire Department and is authorized to act under Alaska Statue 18.70.
This position will be required to work a non-traditional work schedule, and work a 48/96 schedule. The incumbent will be on-duty at the Fire Station for 2 days, followed by 4 days off. While on-duty, the incumbent will be required to stay at the Fire Station.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Respond to emergencies and perform firefighting, rescue, emergency medical duties as assigned.
Maintain inventory, readiness of equipment and supplies.
Assist the Training Division to assure training course is taught according to lesson plan and as scheduled.
Maintain training skills and certification through participation in applicable education opportunities and training as
required.
Operate, clean and inspect emergency, fire, rescue, medical and life saving tools, equipment and facilities.
Inspects and maintains specialized firefighter self-contained breathing apparatus, Air pack units,
and other breathing and air filtration equipment.
Coordinate hydrostatic testing of all breathing air and oxygen cylinders.
Coordinates refilling of medical oxygen cylinders in Barrow and supports Slope-wide efforts of medical
oxygen systems.
Operates and inspects emergency, fire, rescue, medical and life saving tools and equipment.
Works with Captains to oversee EMS operations of the department, making recommendations as necessary.
Performs Quality Assurance activities with the Captain by reviewing patient care reports for accuracy, completeness and compliance, ensuring patient care standards are met.
Perform ambulance apparatus checks and maintain both inventory and mechanical check-off sheets on a monthly basis.
Serve as the HIPAA compliance officer and ensure that staff received required annual trainings.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of NSB Fire Department policies and procedures, firefighting and emergency services techniques and procedures, and related safety and legal issues.
Knowledge of fire ground operations safety.
Knowledge of pre-hospital emergency medical care practices.
Knowledge and ability to use emergency response vehicles, specialized fire department and personal protective equipment and gear, rescue equipment and emergency medical equipment and tools.
Skill in assessing emergency medical patient care needs and providing emergency medical care, including work in aero-medical environment.
Skills in analyzing, complete firefighting and emergency services issues and developing solutions for prevention and mitigation of emergencies.
Knowledge of methods and techniques to present training programs.
Skills in planning, organizing and scheduling technical training classes.
Education, Experience, Certifications and Licenses Required
High School graduate or G.E.D/or, a combination of 12 years of education and work related experience.
Emergency Medical Technician I certification.
Firefighter I and Hazardous Materials Operations level certifications.
Ability to obtain American Heart Association Basic Life Support Instructor certification within one year of hire.
Ability to obtain Firefighter II certification.
Ability to obtain Fire Officer I/Fire Instructor I certification.
Three years of paid or volunteer arctic firefighting experience.
One year of supervisory work experience.
Valid Alaska Driver's License that meets the North Slope Borough insurance criteria.
