What are the responsibilities and job description for the Cook / Chef at Summer Camp *Seasonal - June to August position at North Star Camp for Boys?
North Star chefs prepare and cook a varied menu three meals a day for our 300 person camp community. North Star’s food is the best in camping and it’s because our Cooks & Kitchen Staff work so hard to keep us well fed with nutritious kid-friendly meals.
Who We Are
North Star Camp is a residential boys summer camp located in Hayward, Wisconsin. Every summer, approximately 300 campers come to the shores of Spider Lake to make new friends, learn new skills, grow as individuals and make memories that last a lifetime. Our incredible staff come from all over the world to create a nurturing and fun environment. We are actively hiring great role models who are energetic, collaborative and hard working to join the team for this summer. Ready to make a difference and have the best summer of your life? We’d love to have you apply!
The Role In A Nutshell
We’re looking for an experienced Cook to make delicious food throughout the summer and help our kitchen operation run smoothly. This role starts on or around June 1 and runs through August 8 at our summer camp in Hayward, Wisconsin with the option to extend dates for additional pay either before or after if needed. Room & board are included.
A Typical Day (Even Though There’s No Such Thing As A Typical Day At Camp…)
- Wake up and head to the kitchen around 7 AM to begin preparing breakfast – pancakes with sausage. You start preparing the pancake batter and tend to the grill to make pancakes for the entire camp.
- At 8:30 AM, head outside to ring the breakfast bell. Our entire camp will head to the Lodge where you will help serve our hungry, sleepy campers a delicious breakfast to start their day.
- Once the meal is over, it’s time to clean the kitchen and dining areas to get them ready for the next course. This may include washing dishes, wiping down tables, packaging and properly storing leftover food, etc.
- You have about an hour in between meals to relax, enjoy our waterfront, or read a book.
- Return to the kitchen around 11:00 AM to begin preparing lunch. Lunch is grilled cheese and pasta salad, so you grab some loaves of bread to start to prepare the sandwiches for the grill.
- Our kids and staff had a full morning and need to refuel on energy — thankfully you helped cook a delicious meal of food for them to do just that!
- Once the meal is over, it’s time to clean the kitchen and dining areas again with the team before heading off to an afternoon break. There’s a bunch of leftover food, so you make sure you properly package it and put it in the refrigerator so we can serve them again in the next day or so.
- For your afternoon break, you’ve been wanting to go fishing with some friends in the kitchen, so you borrow one of the boats and see if you can reel in the big musky!
- Around 5 PM, return to the kitchen to begin preparations for dinner – BBQ chicken and fries. The chicken breasts need to be prepped, so you head to the back of the kitchen to open the packages of chicken and lather them in BBQ.
- At 6 PM, dinner is served! Let’s send the campers and staff to evening program and bed with full bellies and smiles on their faces.
- After dinner, clean the kitchen and dining areas so they are ready to go the following morning. This meal has a lot more dishes than normal, so you finish putting away some food and then work with some other team members and use our industrial dishwasher to clean and put away the dishes.
- Once those tasks are done, feel free to relax in the evening — or feel free to participate in whatever camp event is happening (all-camp campfires, Capture The Flag, etc.).
This Job Might Be For You If:
- You love service with a smile. Our campers and staff love our kitchen staff — because you help keep their bellies full with delicious food every day. Whether someone comes up to you asking for a food refill, needs a serving of the vegetarian option or just wants to tell you how delicious the meal was, we’re looking for someone who loves helping out.
- You’re a team player. There are a lot of moving parts in the kitchen when it comes to preparing delicious meals and making sure things are sanitary and safe. Our best kitchen teams are the ones who work together – when someone needs an extra hand, you’re willing to lend yours to help get the job done faster.
- You’re adaptable and flexible. While our meal schedules are pretty much the same every day, things can pop up that require our kitchen team to be nimble and flexible. We may have been planning a picnic lunch but a storm cloud is coming in and we need to quickly move our meal setup from outdoors to indoors. While it’s a minor inconvenience, you’ll have no problem rolling up your sleeves and making it happen as quickly as possible to keep our daily schedule on time.
- You’re a culinary master. Our menu is very kid-friendly but if you have that special recipe that has been in your family for generations, or you have a twist on cinnamon bread that is to die for, then please bring it to camp and share it with our community! Some of our favorite menu items were brought to camp by our previous chefs.
- You’re organized and thinking a few days ahead. Our menu is multi-faceted. Not only do we have meals in camp, but we oftentimes have to prepare meals for trips that are heading out or getting lunch and dinner boxes ready for our weekly Cruiser Day. Whatever it may be, you’ll need to have the foresight to think ahead and make sure we’re ordering food and other supplies needed to keep the kitchen running smoothly and the planned menu intact.
