Job Title: General Manager – Underground Wet Utilities
Location: Phoenix, AZ
Salary: $140K-$200K annually, DOE
Company Overview:
Our Company is a leading underground utility subcontractor specializing in wet utilities. With nearly four decades of experience, we have built a reputation for delivering top-quality service with reliability and excellence. Serving Metro Phoenix and Maricopa County, we focus on providing superior underground utility construction services for commercial general contractors. We are currently looking for a General Manager – Underground Wet Utilities to oversee and manage all aspects of our underground utility projects, focusing on water, sewer, and other related systems.
Position Overview:
As the General Manager, you will be responsible for the overall operations of the Wet Utilities Division, including project management, team leadership, budget oversight, safety compliance, and client relations. This role combines strategic planning with hands-on management, ensuring that all projects are executed efficiently, safely, and within budget. You will lead a team of professionals, including project managers, field supervisors, and equipment operators, ensuring seamless communication and successful project delivery.
Key Responsibilities:
- Project Management: Oversee the execution of underground water and sewer projects, ensuring that they are completed on time, within scope, and on budget. This includes planning, coordinating, and monitoring project progress from start to finish
- Leadership & Supervision: Manage and mentor employees, subcontractors, and field teams, including foremen and equipment operators, ensuring a productive and positive work environment
- Profit & Loss Management: Take responsibility for the financial success of projects, including budgeting, cost management, and ensuring that profit margins are met. Review and assess each project's financial performance
- Safety Compliance: Work closely with the Safety Department to ensure that all safety regulations and government standards are followed on-site. Maintain a strong culture of safety, with a focus on risk management and preventive measures
- Business Development & Client Relations: Develop and maintain relationships with key clients, ensuring their needs are met and projects are delivered to satisfaction. Work with leadership to expand business opportunities and client base
- Project Paperwork & Documentation: Ensure all project-related paperwork is completed accurately and submitted on time. This includes preparing estimates, reviewing plans and specifications, managing project change orders, and ensuring all out-of-scope work is properly documented and billed
- Contract Negotiation: Lead the negotiation of project contracts with clients, subcontractors, and vendors, ensuring favorable terms and conditions that align with the company's goals. This includes negotiating project scope, timelines, pricing, and any changes to agreements while ensuring legal and financial protection for the company
- Staff Development: Foster employee growth by providing training and leadership development opportunities. Promote a team-oriented environment that emphasizes collaboration and high performance
- On-Site Visits: Perform occasional on-site project visits to ensure quality control, troubleshoot issues, and provide leadership to the field teams
- Collaboration: Work closely with the Senior Estimators, Operations Manager, and project teams to ensure seamless project execution, effective risk management, and successful project delivery
Qualifications:
- 10 years of heavy civil/underground utility project management experience, with at least 5 years in a leadership role
- Experience in Maricopa County
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to manage and develop teams across both office and field operations
- Proven track record of successfully managing underground wet utilities projects, including water, sewer, storm drain, and related systems
- Extensive experience with project budgeting, estimating, and managing profit and loss for large-scale utility construction projects
- In-depth knowledge of local codes, MAG specifications, and safety regulations (OSHA 30 certification preferred)
- Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to work effectively with clients, employees, and subcontractors
- Proficient with project management software, spreadsheets, and other related tools
- Must have a valid driver's license and a clean driving record
