RN Externship Program

Summary: Our goal is to provide nursing students the opportunity to enhance previously learned skills under the supervision of an experienced registered nurse in the healthcare setting and to provide an optimal clinical learning environment.

ORIENTATION OBJECTIVES:

• To improve self and work satisfaction for staff nurses
• To facilitate and prepare student learning in the work area and develop interpersonal skills
• To encourage recruitment of graduate nurses

NURSING STUDENT SKILLS:

Student nurses will perform only clinical procedures and activities within their scope of practice from the skills check list the school provides.

The student nurse must have:

• Knowledge about nursing procedures
• Ability to understand and follow instructions
• Ability to learn from other nurses who are more experienced
• Have excellent observation and analytical skills
• Ability to organize
• Ability to interact with other nurses and get all queries answered
• Ability to learn quickly and retain information
• A genuine concern for patients and patient care

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILTIES:

• Follow directions of the assigned Registered Nurse
• Work in the shifts allotted
• Bathe and change patients
• Assist patients with ADLs i.e. eating, toileting, walking, etc.
• Monitor aspects of patient care like diet and physical activities
• Monitor vital signs
• Monitor, record and report symptoms and progress regarding the condition of a patient
• Maintain accurate details and reports about the patient’s condition
• Assist with medical tests as per MD instruction
• Start IVs
• Pre-op, Post-op care for surgeries
• Observe and learn from the functions of experienced nurses
• Each Extern must complete 320 hours at the facility

Minimum Qualifications:

• Applicant must be currently enrolled in a registered nursing program and have completed their first year of nursing school. Must be in good standing.
