What are the responsibilities and job description for the Staff Nurse IOP position at North Sunflower Medical Center?
Responsible to: Program Director
- QUALIFICATIONS
- Education: Graduation from a state approved school of nursing, Certification in gerontological or psychiatric nursing is desirable.
- Licensure: R.N. state license required.
- Experience: Acute-care clinical nursing experience required; psychiatric nursing experience preferred.
- Other Skills: Client and family teaching; teaching/learning materials
- development: problem solving; complaint resolution.
PERFORMANCE STANDARDS AND CRITERIA
STANDARD I
The staff nurse assesses and monitors clients’ health status and physical care needs at admission and while clients are in the program.
Criteria:
- Completes an admission geropsychiatric nursing assessment for every
client according to unit standard.
- Implements fall prevention and other protocols as indicated.
- Regularly obtains and documents clients’ vital signs and weight
according to program standards:
- Communicates relevant clinical and other client care information to
Program Director, Medical Director and Treatment Team members as
necessary and appropriate.
- Monitors clients on an ongoing basis to identify health needs, problems,
and/or symptoms.
- Assist clients with personal needs as needed or requested.
- Coordinates and documents clients’ care in cases of medical emergency,
providing a report to the Emergency Department or other appropriate resource.
- Assist clients on and off the van as needed
- Assist with History and Physical as needed or requested.
STANDARD II
The staff nurse provides health education for clients, families and community
groups as needed or requested.
Criteria:
- Provides client education in the areas of self-care, medical/psychiatric
conditions, medications and/or physical/mental health as indicated or
requested.
- Provides families and family caregivers with education on health-
related topics.
- Provides education to community groups as requested by the Program.
Director.
STANDARD III
The staff nurse functions as a member of the Interdisciplinary Treatment
Team
Criteria:
- Attends Treatment Team meetings.
- Completes client education and spiritual assessments as requested.
- Facilitates nutritional assessment data as needed.
- Implements and documents nursing interventions that are part of the
Interdisciplinary Treatment Plan.
- Conduct community meetings as requested.
STANDARD IV
The staff nurse demonstrates professionalism in all aspects of
performance:
Criteria:
- Maintains current active state license.
- Meets program staff development standards.
- Observes client confidentiality.
- Respects and protects clients’ legal rights.
- Participates in the development of a therapeutic alliance between the
Interdisciplinary Treatment Team clients and their families.
- Displays cooperation, flexibility and a positive attitude.
- Communicates suggestions and/or complaints through appropriate
standards.
- Adheres to safety and infection control guidelines.
- Adheres to hospital’s dress code and maintains a professional
appearance. Incorporates new knowledge into job tasks.
STANDARD V
The staff nurse performs administrative, clerical and other task
according to program policy:
Criteria:
- Participates in the completion and maintenance of clients’
medical records, including recording of physician’s orders.
- Completes client billing procedures according to hospital
policy.
- Maintains a supply of snacks for clients.
- Maintains physical examination supplies according to program
standards.
