Description
The Nutrition Education Specialist focuses on promoting nutritious behaviors of low-income audiences and the community at large, utilizing various educational and communication strategies and platforms.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Certification:
- Bachelor’s degree in nutrition, dietetics, community health or related field
Special Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Comfortable working in low-income communities with diverse populations
- Well-organized and self-directed; able to multitask
- Knowledge of nutrition, food, and food safety
- Great attention to detail with the ability to make independent decisions
- Ability to collaboratively work with diverse groups and teach in group settings
- Ability to manage change and adapt to a changing environment
- Resource management skills
- Proficiency with MS Office applications
- Knowledge of food banking or food shelf systems a plus
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred
Experience:
- One year of program implementation experience with demonstrated goal setting and evaluation skills
- Experience with volunteer management and/or event planning
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Serve as a contact and source of nutrition education for all partner agencies of the NTFB (recipes, handouts, resources, meal planning, food safety, and food pantry guidelines)
- Follow administrative procedures for site assessments, volunteer recruitment, reporting requirements, and documentation to ensure proper preparation and implementation for each nutrition intervention
- Ensure nutrition activities are documented in a timely manner for funding purposes in accordance to fulfill the SNAP-Ed requirements
- Foster an inclusive, safe, and fun learning environment for volunteers and class participants; continuously evaluate nutrition education programs to ensure that both participant and volunteer needs are being met
- Teach requested nutrition workshops and facilitate community fairs and events, both in-person and virtually
- Collaborate with various programs and departments at the NTFB to incorporate food and nutrition best practices and educational opportunities
- Coordinate nutrition education delivery logistics, such as menu planning, recipe development, food purchases, and distribution as needed
- Provide input into marketing tools for promotional purposes, volunteer recruitment, social media platforms, website, and mailers
- Procure teaching materials and other related educational incentives
- Obtain Food Handling and ServSafe Manager Certification
- Perform other duties and projects as assigned

- The person in this position needs to adapt well in the face of workplace stressors, such as customer complaints, compliance offenses, meeting deadlines and competing priorities.

- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop; kneel; crouch or crawl; talk or hear.
- Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- The employee must occasionally lift and move up to 25 pounds.
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:
- Moderate noise (i.e. business office with open floor plan with computers, phone, and printers, light traffic)
- Reliable transportation and a valid DL and insurance is required for travel within our 13-county service area; must be willing to travel at least 50% of the time
