JOB SUMMARY
Performs clinical lab procedures, quality assurance and instrument maintenance.
SUMMARY OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Recognizes test inconsistencies and takes appropriate corrective action.
- Verifies and calls critical results to physicians or nurses immediately and according to lab policy.
- Reviews results for clerical accuracy prior to completing.
- Runs quality control tests according to lab policy and maintains appropriate data recording.
- Takes appropriate corrective action when quality control results are outside acceptable limits. Documents action taken. Seeks help from lead technician, technical supervisor, or lab director as required.
- Holds patient results until quality control standards meet agency and facility guidelines. Reports unresolved errors to the lead technician, technical supervisor, or lab director.
- Observes and follows department preventive maintenance schedules.
- Documents all instrument checks, preventive maintenance, problems and corrective action taken.
- Recognizes, analyzes, and takes corrective action to resolve instrument/clinical problems.
- Reports unresolved instrument/clinical problems to the lead technician, technical supervisor, or lab director
- Checks outstanding tests list in a timely manner and troubleshoots/follows through on outstanding tests which appear to have not been collected/received when expected
- Obtains blood specimens and collects non-blood specimens such as urine, sputum, and throat swabs for laboratory testing
- Answers phone calls – record request for blood collection, answers general questions concerning test orders and collection takes messages and routes calls.
- Uses at least 2 patient identifiers on each patient encounter.
- Explains procedures/process before obtaining specimens
- Offers additional assistance; seeks to ensure patient satisfaction before concluding encounter.
BASIC SKILLS
- Basic computer knowledge and ability to touch type.
- Ability to discern color.
- Experience with lab information systems or the willingness to learn.
- Ability to work on several projects or committee if there is a desire
- Ability to utilize hands on knowledge from theory
EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
- MLT (ASCP) certification or equivalent.
- Associates degree in Medical Technology or chemical, physical or biological science.
- Education in all age groups ranging from newborn to the geriatric population obtained either in a school education or subsequent training.
