Sample Control Technician
Section 1 – Position Summary
This position supports the sample login process though direct customer service, LIMS data entry, preparation and distribution of incoming samples for laboratory testing and maintaining proper sample retention. Additionally, the position will clean and prepare sample containers and assemble sample kits for the various customer sampling projects. Other duties may include sample preservation activities, basic support equipment checks such as balance calibrations, temperature checks and lab water quality checks.
Section 2 – Major Responsibilities
1. Serve as point of contact and provide customer service to internal and external laboratory clients.
2. Assist sample control personnel with their workload as needed to ensure processing of samples and containers in a timely manner.
3. Review work orders in LIMS to ensure information coincides with that on the Chain of Custody form.
4. Serve as primary custodian which includes controlled distribution of sample containers to and from laboratory analysts.
5. Ensure proper preservation, storage, retention and disposal of samples.
6. Clean and prepare sample containers according to laboratory protocols.
7. Prepare sample kits including labeling of containers and tracking of coolers.
8. Receives laboratory supplies and process packing slips.
9. Maintain equipment in laboratory to ensure proper cleanliness, the accuracy of measurements and functional operation.
10. Various departmental duties as assigned by Supervisor.
Section 3 – Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
1. Must be capable of understanding laboratory procedures, policies and duties to be performed.
2. Must develop degree of competence with sample control documentation, giving careful attention to details.
3. Must understand federal, state and organizational sample collection and handling requirements.
4. Must be able to communicate effectively with customers and laboratory personnel.
5. Must be able to operate and maintain equipment to be used.
6. Must be able to use a computer.
Section 4 – Education and Experience
1. Must possess a high school diploma or GED.
2. Requires a valid Texas Driver’s License.
Section 5 – Environmental Factors, Activity Levels and Equipment
May require moderate physical labor, attention to detail, some eyestrain, extensive standing, bending, and lifting. Regular exposure to odiferous wastewater byproducts. Potential hazards include working with or around carcinogens, pathogenic organisms and highly flammable solvents. Equipment used includes the following: Lab Grade Dishwashers, Conductance Meters, Analytical Balances, Ovens, Refrigerated Storage Units, Computers, Lab Glassware and other basic laboratory equipment.
