About the Role - Hypersonic Systems R&D and Test Engineer

North Wind is seeking a highly skilled engineer with expertise in hypersonic system design, analysis and/or ground/flight test. This role involves leading multidisciplinary teams, conducting trade studies, mitigating technical risks, and driving projects from concept to testing.


Responsibilities

  • Lead R&D projects in propulsion, aerodynamics, and aerothermal ground and flight test article development and testing.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to execute complex projects.
  • Identify and resolve system-level challenges while ensuring seamless integration.
  • Develop and implement technical risk mitigation strategies.
  • Guide system architecture, design, and testing through trade studies and critical technical decisions.
  • Oversee design reviews and program progression from development to manufacturing and testing.
  • Partner with leadership to develop staffing plans and build a high-performing technical team.
  • Work cross-functionally with Manufacturing, Test & Operations, Program Management, and Quality Assurance.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or related field.
  • 10 years in hypersonic R&D, prototype development, or supersonic/hypersonic ground and flight testing.
  • Experience leading or participating in hypersonic system development, ground/flight test campaigns, and subsystem design.
  • Expertise in systems engineering, risk management, and technical decision-making.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to maintain customer relationships.
  • Experience working in small, agile teams with minimal predefined processes.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.


Preferred Skills

  • Extensive experience in hypersonic system development and flight testing.
  • Expertise in hypersonic ground test facility design, modification, and commissioning.
  • Proficiency in JAMA, MATLAB, Python, SolidWorks, and 3D CAD software.
  • Familiarity with MS Office and configuration management tools (JIRA, GIT, JAMA, etc.).
