Summary
Responsible for the overall building and campus design layout for customer wind tunnel systems and the frequent design of specialized industrial steel equipment, concrete foundations, and equipment structural support systems. This is a highly collaborative role requiring coordination with other internal engineering disciplines and technical oversight of design and construction subcontractors. This role spans all project phases including proposal, design, construction, post-construction validation, and commissioning.
Responsibilities
· Develop facility and equipment design solutions to meet customer requirements. Collaborate with multi-disciplinary project team including PM, subcontracted local A&E, and internal engineering disciplines to ensure functionality of the facility and equipment interfaces. Prepare detailed calculations for equipment and equipment support designs, and provide direction, review, and approval of design drawings to ensure specifications are met.
· Perform engineering tasks on schedule and within budget. Ensure system design aligns with as-sold scope, customer requirements, quality standards, and industry codes. Communicate regularly with project team on status, issues, and variances to plan.
· Document and present work in accordance with quality requirements. Prepare design criteria, calculation packages, procurement specifications, technical reports, validation plans, and product manuals. Participate and lead internal and customer design reviews.
· Provide remote and on-site engineering support during building construction and specialized industrial equipment fabrication and installation. Review contractor work for compliance, respond to contractor questions and RFI’s, coordinate field engineering changes, and conduct site surveys.
· Assist marketing in developing proposals for future work. Develop concepts, facility layouts, cost estimates, proposal write-ups, analyses, options, and recommendations. Serve as Subject Matter Expert when presenting to customers.
Qualifications
· Bachelors or Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Structural Engineering
· 15 years of practical work experience in design engineering, structural analysis, building construction oversight or similar roles.
· Must be a self-starter, able to work on multiple projects, and prioritize workload.
· Proficiency in structural engineering with a working knowledge of architectural details.
· Working knowledge of basic Electrical and Mechanical engineering.
· Experience with FEM modeling using RISA 3D, ANSYS, or similar structural analysis and design programs.
· Familiarity with national building codes and design codes including IBC, AISC, ACI, NFPA, and FM Global
· Experience writing technical specifications.
· Proficiency in CAD: AutoCAD, Revit, and SolidWorks preferred.
· Excellent interpersonal, presentation, and leadership skills, demonstrated initiative and attention to completeness, accuracy and detail.
· Demonstrated ability to meet budgets and schedules.
· Ability to work effectively and productively as an individual contributor and collaborate as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
· Ability to travel domestically and internationally. Travel typically is less than 15%.
