Position:  Exceptional Children’s Instructional Coach (Teacher)

Reports To:  EC Director

Salary:  Commensurate with experience and qualifications

Benefits:  Teachers’ and State Employees’ Retirement System (TSERS) and NC State Health Plan

FLSA Status:  Exempt

Work Week Schedule:  Monday – Friday

Work Hours:  7:30AM – 4:00PM; occasional evenings and weekends

Employment Term:  10 months



Northeast Academy for Aerospace and Advanced Technologies is a public regional STEM school. Our coaches facilitate learning through hands-on, project and problem based instruction thoughtfully designed to challenge students. We encourage and support each other to think differently, creatively, and purposefully about teaching and learning, keeping with the idea that we’re all teachers, we’re all learners, and we all have potential for high intellectual and professional growth throughout our lives.

 

Position Purpose

Teachers in innovative schools have a commitment to ensure that every student graduates from high school ready for college, careers, and life. Through rigorous teaching and learning based on high expectations along with extensive, onsite coaching, teachers foster a culture of collaborative inquiry, providing students with the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) knowledge, skills, and dispositions that will enable them to participate fully in the technologically-rich, contemporary society.  NEAAAT teachers are positive, enthusiastic, and proactive educators with a demonstrated passion for working with middle and high school age students. The Exceptional Children’s Instructional Coach will provide students with exceptional needs academic support as defined in their IEPs, while supporting needs of the Exceptional Children’s program.



Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead students to develop soft skills, including critical thinking, problem solving, communication, and collaboration skills
  • Utilize technology to facilitate instruction and maximize student learning
  • Employ a variety of assessment tools and strategies to measure student progress toward learning, college and career goals
  • Identify and select different instructional resources and methods to meet students' varying needs
  • Promote high expectations and the skills needed for success beyond high school
  • Communicate necessary information regularly to students, colleagues and parents regarding student progress and student needs
  • Develop and support the implementation of IEPs for students with disabilities, and use diagnostic information obtained from tests and other assessment procedures to update IEPs as needed
  • Employ a variety of teaching methods to meet the student’s academic, behavioral, and/or socioemotional needs. Implementation of these methods may require the adaptation or development of materials
  • Communicate with parents regarding their children’s educational progress via periodic written progress reports.
  • Provide and submit accurate data and reports as needed to ensure program compliance and student progress
  • Demonstrate personal commitment to professional growth through participation in professional learning activities 
  • Contribute as a member of a high performing team
  • Perform other duties as assigned and as necessary to fulfill the day-to-day needs of the school

 

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Knowledge of the emotional and social development of children and the influences of family, community, and cultural differences on student success
  • Ability to work effectively in a collegial, team-centered environment
  • Intrinsically motivated and dedicated to continuous professional and personal growth
  • Ability to effectively engage parents and community in the learning process
  • Represent the school positively in the community
  • Excellent organizational skills and communication skills, both written and oral
  • Understand the critical nature of building positive working relationships with students, parents and colleagues
  • Ability to leverage technologies to maximize efficiency and effectiveness
  • Ability to work with a high degree of accuracy
  • Knowledge of PowerSchool and CECAS; knowledge of CANVAS preferred
  • Considerable knowledge of word processing software, spreadsheets, and databases
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local policies and procedures regarding exceptional children
  • Considerable knowledge of the ethical guidelines applicable to the position as outlined by professional organizations and/or federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations
  • Considerable knowledge of the current literature, trends, and developments in the field of exceptional children education and federal programs
  • Ability to maintain complete and accurate records and statistics and to develop meaningful reports from that information

 

Education, Training, Experience

  • Current NC Professional Educator’s License containing one or more areas of special education.
  • Baccalaureate degree from an accredited four-year college or university with a concentration in education or related field. Master’s degree preferred.
  • At least 1 year experience teaching students with special needs.
  • Possession of a valid NC driver’s license.

  • Possess a deep commitment to serving the needs of students with disabilities and their families.
