About the Northeast Community Center

The Northeast Community Center (NECC) is an independent non-profit community center and treasured neighborhood anchor in NE Portland. Located in the former NE Family YMCA facility, the NECC is a thriving hub that offers recreation, aquatics, fitness, wellness, and enrichment programs and activities for all ages. Job OverviewWorking year-round in our warm-water indoor pool, NECC Aquatics Staff provide a fun and safe environment to swim, learn, and enjoy a variety of aquatics activities. We're committed to incorporating an equity-focused approach across all aspects of our organization to ensure our programs are inclusive and accessible to everyone.We are a single-guard pool with a focus on community building and emergency prevention. We're seeking an individual who's passionate about aquatics and thrives in a team environment, dedicated to upholding safe aquatic practices.Position Requirements

· Must be at least 16 years old and hold a current Lifeguard Certification

OR

· Be at least 16 years old and willing and able to participate in ARC Lifeguard Certification process through The Northeast Community Center

· Maintain strong interpersonal/communication skills with staff and guests.

· Able to work with and give instructions to a diverse population in a way that makes everyone feel respected and included, reflect on personal actions, and apply feedback.

· Demonstrate awareness of others’ social identities (e.g., race, gender, disability status, religion, etc.) and understand their relevance in the workplace and NECC programs and activities.

· Advocates for and embodies NECC’s values of Collaboration, Well-Being, Equity and Inclusion, Learning, and Integrity in the wider community.

Specific Responsibilities

· Ensure the safety of members and guests in the natatorium

· Be alert and diligent at all times while on duty

· Note any specific safety concerns to the supervisor

· Provide clear and concise instructions to new guests, as well as others behaving inappropriately

· Test the pool water frequently to ensure safe chemical balance

· Other duties as discussed with supervisor as assigned

Position Details

· Starting hourly wage – $17.00-$18/hr depending on experience.

· Hours may vary according to the needs of the pool.

· Part-time position – Saturday & Sunday required 7:00am - 7:00pm, Monday - Friday sub hours available

· 100% of staff at the Northeast Community Center have received the Covid-19 vaccine. The person applying for this position will be required to be vaccinated.

· The person in this position needs to be able to: move throughout the building, ascend/descend two flights of stairs, observe participants up to 20 yards away, move around the pool and through narrow areas of the pool deck, position and remove a backboard from the pool, quickly enter and exit the pool and assist participants as needed. Unfortunately, our building is not currently ADA-accessible.

· If selected, candidates will need to submit to a background check. Prior involvement with the justice system will not immediately disqualify a candidate.
